Nicolas Jackson: The most misunderstood striker in the Premier League

Nicolas Jackson: The most misunderstood striker in the Premier League

Nicolas Jackson may be the most misunderstood striker in the Premier League. When you build your perfect modern striker, the list reads like this: pace, strength, link-up play, movement in behind, pressing, aggression and an ability to create chances at will. Now ask yourself, who does that remind you of? When the crowd laments five missed chances in a game, I see something different. I see the only striker in the league who gets five chances in a game. And I ask you this: what is harder to coach, all of those attributes, or improving a conversion rate from 15% to 20%? At 20%, you are looking at a goal a game. At 25%, you are looking at a machine. Nicolas Jackson spent three seasons at Chelsea where he divided opinion, more Marmite than mighty. The modern fan has the memory of a goldfish, rarely seeing beyond the last five games. Take a step back and the numbers tell a different story. In his debut season at Stamford Bridge, Jackson scored 17 goals in 44 appearances. Didier Drogba, in his first Chelsea season, scored 16 in 41. Jackson edged him. And remember, Drogba walked into Mourinho's 2004/05 juggernaut, a side that won the league with 95 points and conceded just 15 goals all season. Jackson had no such luxury. This is why I am tipping Nicolas Jackson to prove the doubters wrong and emerge as one of the signings of the summer. Signed by Aston Villa for £65m, he returns to work under Unai Emery, one of the most accomplished managers in the Premier League, and there is no more telling signal in football than a manager who eagerly pursues a former player. He joins what I believe will be one of the most exciting attacking units in the league, Jackson, Manzambi and the teenage Senegalese sensation Ibrahim Mbaye. So what does a great season look like for Nicolas Jackson? Close your eyes in any pub in England and someone will shout twenty Premier League goals. But last season, in the entire Premier League, only two players hit twenty non-penalty goals, one of them being Erling Haaland, who managed 22. And that is measuring a striker on one KPI alone. A truly high performance season looks more like this: 15 goals, 10 assists, 25 goal contributions. That is the complete striker's return. And if this new attacking unit can gel quickly, Villa have a genuine shot at Champions League football. This is an elite footballer, not a spreadable meat extract. So when analysing Jackson this year, watch his game, watch what he brings to the team, get ready for plenty of goals, assists and yellow cards (and a few open goal stinkers too!). Because just like his namesake, Jackson is box office! --- Nicholas Bull is a British real estate entrepreneur who has called Dubai home for 12 years. WSL talking points: Chelsea punish Arsenal and Putellas finds her rhythm

WSL talking points: Chelsea punish Arsenal and Putellas finds her rhythm

The Gunners lacked cutting edge at Stamford Bridge while the former Barcelona star dominated against Brighton How to solve the problem of an inability to take your chances? That is the question that will haunt the Arsenal head coach Renée Slegers over the coming days. In their 1-0 defeat by Chelsea, Arsenal applied more than enough pressure to make a difference but in registering only two of their 18 shots on target, a fundamental lack of ruthlessness remains. They dominated the opening stages at Stamford Bridge but, as has often been the case this season, they were made to pay for their wastefulness. None of their nine first-half attempts troubled the Blues goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. Chelsea, however, had five of eight on target and scored just before half-time through Alyssa Thompson. “I wanted to keep it away from the players because they can score goals and they can finish and they will get the rewards for their work,” Slegers said. With their season unravelling, however, solutions need to be found quickly. Sophie Downey WSL roundup: Putellas scores first London City goal, Man City maintain perfect start Continue reading...

Chelsea turn up heat on Arsenal as Alyssa Thompson strike settles WSL derby

Chelsea turn up heat on Arsenal as Alyssa Thompson strike settles WSL derby

Arsenal’s title chances were dealt a significant blow after a narrow defeat at the hands of Chelsea . Alyssa Thompson’s first-half finish was the difference on a competitive afternoon at Stamford Bridge but one that ultimately left Renée Slegers with more questions than answers about how to save their season. “Worried? No,” Slegers said. “Confidence is something that fluctuates. They know who they are and they know what they can bring. What’s important is that there’s always phases in the season and there’s different things you need to work on or focus on. Continue reading...

WSL rivals meet at Stamford Bridge; 4.30pm BST kick-off Live scores | Putellas on target for Lionesses | Email Will Two unbeaten teams with grand ambitions arrive at Stamford Bridge after underwhelming 1-0 wins in Europe in midweek. The pair are yet to lose this season but it does not feel like either side has hit their straps. A clash against a supposed title rival could be the inspiration required to kick on. If one does secures a victory today, it should be the requisite boost for the winners and blow to the losers. Chelsea are in the slight better form with two wins from three, while Arsenal have drawn twice, scoring only two times in three league games, and were lucky to come away from the fixture against Manchester United with a point. ‘Island girl’ Malard aims to ‘become a legend’ in Réunion with Bompastor

She left her Indian Ocean island home at the urging of Chelsea’s now-manager – now they’re working together again in pursuit of a Stamford Bridge legacy It is rare to see Melvine Malard without a grin and she has a mountain of reasons to keep it that way. A wedding in June, a big-money move to Chelsea, a Ballon d’Or nomination and a first taste of a fiery London derby against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The French forward is loving life and the personality behind the smile that instantly connects her to teammates is infectious. “Goals,” says Malard, with a laugh, when asked what keeps her happy. “Seriously though, it’s seeing the kids, the families, my family, in the stands. It is crazy. I love my life, I love my job, I’m happy with my wife and everything is good. I smile because of those things, because I’m happy.” Continue reading...

Todd Boehly exits Chelsea diminished after having his fingers burned

Todd Boehly exits Chelsea diminished after having his fingers burned

The billionaire’s departure will change little day-to-day but could be significant for club’s stadium plans Not since a doomed foray into the thorny world of the transfer market has Todd Boehly had any real influence over the day-to-day at Chelsea. The American exits football as a diminished figure four years on, along with his fellow investor Mark Walter, and the first thing to say is that little will change in the Stamford Bridge boardroom just because Boehly has left the scene. Clearlake Capital, the US private equity firm founded by Behdad Eghbali and José E Feliciano, was already the majority owner and guiding force. The trio of Boehly, Walter and the Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss had an equal share of a 38.5% stake but have drifted into irrelevance since the BlueCo consortium bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich for £2.5bn in 2022. Hull City’s rise from Championship strugglers to Premier League fliers

Hull City’s rise from Championship strugglers to Premier League fliers

Hull were nearly relegated to League One last year. Now they are fourth in the Premier League By WhoScored Sixteen months ago Hull City avoided relegation to League One on goal difference. Four months ago, they needed a last-minute goal from Oli McBurnie at Wembley to win the Championship playoff final. Three weeks ago, when the pre-season predictions were published, they were tipped to threaten Derby County’s record of the worst ever points tally in the Premier League. On Saturday night, they left Stamford Bridge third in the Premier League with eight points. The 2-2 draw extended their unbeaten run to four games. They have beaten Manchester United and Coventry , and picked up draws against Aston Villa and Chelsea . We are in September and there are 34 more games to come. Hull will not be competing with Arsenal and Manchester City come the end of May. But their start has been remarkable. Almost everyone doubted whether the qualities that took them on an improbable run to the Premier League could keep them there. Continue reading...

Chelsea thrash Manchester United in WSL as Lauren James revels in free role

Chelsea thrash Manchester United in WSL as Lauren James revels in free role

A swaggering Chelsea cast off any suggestion that they had lost the ability to kill off games, putting five goals past a worryingly lacklustre and lackadaisical Manchester United side. The match had been talked about as something of a must win for Sonia Bompastor’s side after they were inexplicably held to a 1-1 draw by Aston Villa on the opening weekend , despite a staggering domination of that match. Criticism felt harsh given their level of control over the game, but signs of the profligacy evident last season reared its head in warning at Stamford Bridge. Continue reading...
