Netherlands v Germany: Klopp and Xavi begin revival projects with derby

Netherlands v Germany: Klopp and Xavi begin revival projects with derby

Klopp, with Germany, and Xavi, with the Netherlands, face each other in Nations League after disappointing World Cup for both countries Before the latest instalment of a time-honoured international rivalry gearing up for two distinct new beginnings, Jürgen Klopp could not resist sprinkling a little of the old mischief. “The good thing is that we both have the exact same situation,” he said of Xavi Hernández, his counterpart when Germany visit the Netherlands on Thursday night. “We met on Monday and play on Thursday. And the coach knows the players from television. I actually know more of the Dutch players personally than Xavi does. Whether that’s an advantage, I don’t know, but it’s still a fact.” In his public appearances Klopp has been on irrepressible form since taking the role in July. The task of whipping Germany back into shape has visibly and audibly topped up the energy levels that had drained by the time he departed Liverpool. Klopp, his wit sharp and appetite piqued, looks a far cry from the character who, to most trained eyes, was going through the motions upon his unveiling as Red Bull’s head of global soccer early last year. Janet Davies obituary

Janet Davies obituary

My sister, Janet Davies, who has died aged 89, dedicated most of her adult life to international development, ecumenical partnership and social justice. From 1968 to 1986 she worked for Christian Aid in Merseyside and the north-west, and later became regional organiser. Based in Liverpool, and supported by Edward Patey , then dean of the city, Janet used her formidable communicating, networking and nurturing skills to forge grassroots alliances across denominations to deliver and celebrate the practical demonstration of ecumenism that was Christian Aid Week. Florian Wirtz does not look like a £116m player but it is too early to write him off

The 23-year-old playmaker has been disappointing for Liverpool but has he really been that bad? By Opta Analyst When Florian Wirtz signed for Liverpool in the summer of 2025, there was only one logical assumption. The Premier League champions at the time had recruited one of the hottest young talents in world football – a key player in the Bayer Leverkusen team that had won the double in 2023-24 and a star in the Germany team. An exciting and productive young attacking midfielder being added to the best team in England? How could this not work? Football has a habit of flipping the script, though. Last season was difficult for Liverpool for several reasons, and Wirtz, along with other new arrivals, struggled to make the impact expected of a £116m player. There were conversations among fans this summer about how long he and fellow nine-figure signing Alexander Isak should be given before difficult questions needed be asked. The broad consensus was until Christmas. Continue reading...

Liverpool’s Aurélie Csillag on making women’s football more diverse: ‘Visibility starts at the top’

Liverpool’s Aurélie Csillag on making women’s football more diverse: ‘Visibility starts at the top’

The Swiss international explains why she became involved in the club’s Beyond the Goalposts initiative “When I was young I never had a role model. I only watched men’s football, but when women’s football got bigger there were no really good black players. I also want to be a role model for the next generation,” says the Liverpool forward Aurélie Csillag about why she is involved in an initiative being launched by the club in October. Beyond the Goalposts aims to give black and marginalised girls and women pathways and opportunities in football on and off the pitch. It is being carried out by the club’s foundation and wants to “create a safe, inclusive and empowering environment” by providing sessions, including educational and mentoring help, in Liverpool’s community. Sessions begin on 1 October, but people can register their interest at any time. Continue reading...

Mohamed Salah handed six-month driving ban in England

Mohamed Salah handed six-month driving ban in England

London: Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah has been handed a six-month driving ban in England after a Rolls-Royce registered in his name was caught speeding. According to British newspaper The Sun, the vehicle, valued at more than €466,000, was detected exceeding the speed limit by a speed camera in March 2026. The report said Salah, 34, failed to inform police who was driving the vehicle at the time of the offence. In August, a court in Warrington, Cheshire, convicted Salah in his absence for failing to identify the driver and imposed a six-month driving disqualification along with a fine of €769. The report added that Salah did not respond to two notices sent to his mansion, which is estimated to be worth more than €5 million. The offence reportedly occurred in the Wilmslow area of Cheshire, two days after he announced his departure from Liverpool. This is not the first time Salah has faced motoring-related issues. In 2022, he was caught speeding while driving his Ferrari F8 Tributo and received a fine along with three penalty points on his driving licence. He was also photographed using a mobile phone while driving near Anfield in 2018.

Premier League: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Premier League: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Liverpool look stronger at the back, youngsters shine for Brighton and Brentford, and James Trafford makes his England case with Leeds Premier League table | Top scorers In the week that 16-year-old Max Dowman has been thrust into the spotlight , it was another teenager who gave us a glimpse of the future in Brighton’s impressive win over Arsenal. Charalampos Kostoulas – nicknamed ‘Babis’ in his homeland, in homage to former Argentina striker Gabriel Batistuta – has already started twice as many Premier League games as he did in his first season in English football, when he was a backup for Danny Welbeck. The 19-year-old repaid Fabian Hürzeler’s faith in him against the reigning champions. Despite his tender years, Kostoulas already possesses the physical attributes to mix it with the best. He caused Gabriel Magalhães and company problems all afternoon, capping it off with a brilliant goal from 25 yards, his third in eight days. “We always knew that he’s capable of scoring goals out of nowhere,” said Hürzeler. “He just has this intrinsic motivation of really improving every day. He gets more and more professional, he understands the demands from the Premier League more, he understands our demands.” Ed Aarons Match report: Brighton 3-0 Arsenal Match report: Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool Match report: Fulham 1-1 Manchester United Match report: Leeds 0-0 Crystal Palace Continue reading...

Isak pounces to give Liverpool victory on Iraola’s return to Bournemouth

At the final whistle, victory secured, Andoni Iraola embraced both his current players and those he guided to new heights at Bournemouth last season. Liverpool are not yet the overwhelming, suffocating force Iraola wants them to become but they did enough to claim three points here, Alexander Isak capping a peculiar performance with a simple finish. Cody Gakpo was again the architect, the Dutchman the supplier for all four of Isak’s goals this season. Isak’s only other shot before scoring was to balloon a first-time effort high and wide but his second-half strike was sufficient to return Liverpool to winning ways in the Premier League.
