Celebrated for his earnest, dextrous voice, Jackson crossed into the pop charts with the hits Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake) and You Are My Lady Freddie Jackson, the US singer whose smooth and romantic take on R&B found a huge audience in the 1980s, has died aged 70. Trump’s LA and San Diego comments ‘dangerous, if not treasonous’, says Newsom – US politics live

California governor critcizes president for ‘putting a target on two of our biggest cities and one of America’s largest naval hubs’ California to ‘actively monitor’ possible threats after Trump said Iran could ‘take out’ LA and San Diego Susan Collins, the Republican senator for Maine , pointedly distanced herself from Donald Trump in a televised debate with Democratic challenger Troy Jackson on Tuesday, as she sought to present an image of independence in a state that has voted against Trump three times. Proclaiming herself as not the US president’s “favorite senator”, Collins made the highly unusual boast for a Republican that she had voted with Joe Biden, a Democrat, more than 90% of the time when he was president. She also emphasized her differences with her fellow Republicans , saying she voted against her own party more than any other senator. They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles . Let them take out San Diego. Continue reading...

Nicolas Jackson: The most misunderstood striker in the Premier League

Nicolas Jackson: The most misunderstood striker in the Premier League

Nicolas Jackson may be the most misunderstood striker in the Premier League. When you build your perfect modern striker, the list reads like this: pace, strength, link-up play, movement in behind, pressing, aggression and an ability to create chances at will. Now ask yourself, who does that remind you of? When the crowd laments five missed chances in a game, I see something different. I see the only striker in the league who gets five chances in a game. And I ask you this: what is harder to coach, all of those attributes, or improving a conversion rate from 15% to 20%? At 20%, you are looking at a goal a game. At 25%, you are looking at a machine. Nicolas Jackson spent three seasons at Chelsea where he divided opinion, more Marmite than mighty. The modern fan has the memory of a goldfish, rarely seeing beyond the last five games. Take a step back and the numbers tell a different story. In his debut season at Stamford Bridge, Jackson scored 17 goals in 44 appearances. Didier Drogba, in his first Chelsea season, scored 16 in 41. Jackson edged him. And remember, Drogba walked into Mourinho's 2004/05 juggernaut, a side that won the league with 95 points and conceded just 15 goals all season. Jackson had no such luxury. This is why I am tipping Nicolas Jackson to prove the doubters wrong and emerge as one of the signings of the summer. Signed by Aston Villa for £65m, he returns to work under Unai Emery, one of the most accomplished managers in the Premier League, and there is no more telling signal in football than a manager who eagerly pursues a former player. He joins what I believe will be one of the most exciting attacking units in the league, Jackson, Manzambi and the teenage Senegalese sensation Ibrahim Mbaye. So what does a great season look like for Nicolas Jackson? Close your eyes in any pub in England and someone will shout twenty Premier League goals. But last season, in the entire Premier League, only two players hit twenty non-penalty goals, one of them being Erling Haaland, who managed 22. And that is measuring a striker on one KPI alone. A truly high performance season looks more like this: 15 goals, 10 assists, 25 goal contributions. That is the complete striker's return. And if this new attacking unit can gel quickly, Villa have a genuine shot at Champions League football. This is an elite footballer, not a spreadable meat extract. So when analysing Jackson this year, watch his game, watch what he brings to the team, get ready for plenty of goals, assists and yellow cards (and a few open goal stinkers too!). Because just like his namesake, Jackson is box office! --- Nicholas Bull is a British real estate entrepreneur who has called Dubai home for 12 years. Jackie Jackson obituary

Jackie Jackson obituary

Toots and the Maytals bass player whose melodic lines drove some of the biggest reggae hits of the 1960s and 70s The bass player Jackie Jackson, who has died aged 79, was one of the cornerstones of Jamaican popular music. In addition to being the bassist in Toots and the Maytals for more than 50 years, Jackson provided substantial and melodic bass lines underpinning some of the most important reggae hits of the 1960s and 70s, helping tracks such as The Israelites by Desmond Dekker , The Liquidator by Harry J Allstars and the Upsetters’ Return of Django reach the UK Top 10 in 1969. Equally inspired by the pumping approach Lloyd Brevett used on his acoustic upright in the Skatalites, and the electric hooks of James Jamerson at Motown, Jackson was also an important part of the rock steady craze that swept Jamaica in the mid-60s. A mainstay of the house band at Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle studio, the Supersonics, he had his first recording session there for Alton Ellis ’s smash I Have Got a Date (1966, later re-released as Girl I’ve Got a Date), with Jackson’s buoyant bass a propulsive engine that helped make the song one of the defining releases of the rock steady era. Just Play Dead review – Samuel L Jackson and Eva Green punch up switchback crime caper

Just Play Dead review – Samuel L Jackson and Eva Green punch up switchback crime caper

Jackson and Green just about manage to distract viewers from the sub-par Tarantinoesque flourishes, confusing plot points and tired stereotypes Having shot five films since 2020, 82-year-old Martin Campbell is a certified member of the post-retirement director’s club that includes Ridley Scott, Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen et al. Samuel L Jackson (a mere 77) sports his worst hairdo since Jackie Brown – a grey, crimped ponytail with an undercut – in this overworked crime caper, though he is on positively cuddly form by his standards. Interrupting his retirement on a Spanish-speaking Caribbean island with the odd poisoning (seen in the intro), kingpin Jack Wolfe (Jackson) is getting antsy. Afraid the law is close behind him, he hatches a scheme with his philandering wife Nora (Eva Green): help him frame her surfer lover Chad (Jason Fernández) for his supposed murder, and they will split the big-bucks insurance payout. He covers his back for the possibility she might do him in for real by recording her saying as much. But she ropes Chad anyway into her murder conspiracy, plotting to let him take the fall – or perhaps her detective bit on the side Dani (Eoin Macken) will get there first. Continue reading...
