Irwin holds nerve to sink Leeds and send Warrington to Grand Final

Irwin holds nerve to sink Leeds and send Warrington to Grand Final

Leeds 12-14 Warrington Late penalty clinches Old Trafford trip Warrington Wolves reached their first Super League Grand Final in almost a decade after emerging through an absorbing playoff semi-final against Leeds Rhinos to move within 80 minutes of a first league title in over 70 years. The Wire have not been at Old Trafford since 2018 and remain without a league title of any kind since 1955, one of the longest streaks in rugby league. But that streak is now one victory away from ending after Sam Burgess’ side navigated past the Rhinos on a gripping night at Headingley thanks to a dramatic late Ewan Irwin penalty. Palace secure valuable point at unbeaten Leeds

Palace secure valuable point at unbeaten Leeds

Crystal Palace secured a useful point at in-form and unbeaten Leeds as Pierre Sage's side produced a much-improved defensive display to hold the hosts to a goalless draw at Elland Road.

‘Mixed emotions’ for Farke as Leeds stay unbeaten with Crystal Palace stalemate

‘Mixed emotions’ for Farke as Leeds stay unbeaten with Crystal Palace stalemate

Perhaps it is testament to the progress Leeds have made since returning to the Premier League just over a year ago that there was frustration at failing to move up to third after drawing with Crystal Palace. Instead, Daniel Farke’s team enter the prolonged international break in fifth and unbeaten, which is a fine achievement in itself. Apart from Tyrick Mitchell’s disallowed goal, neither side gave much impression they would secure the points. For Palace, it was a first clean sheet of the season, having conceded at least twice in their opening four games, relieving pressure on Pierre Sage, while the hosts endured their first blank. Pino kickstarts Crystal Palace’s Europa League rout of Lech Poznan to ease Sage’s worries

It was worth the wait for Crystal Palace. After being denied their rightful place in the Europa League last season, Pierre Sage’s side made the perfect debut by brushing aside Lech Poznan with a victory that will take some of the heat off their new manager. The Frenchman has big shoes to fill in replacing Oliver Glasner after his predecessor won three trophies in 12 months and there had been some talk of disquiet behind the scenes following his decision to drop the teenager Jaydee Canvot at the weekend. But while Palace face a testing trip to face in-form Leeds on Sunday having conceded 11 goals from their opening four Premier League matches, they were given a big helping hand by their opponents here well before Radoslaw Murawski was sent off late on for a reckless foul on Canvot. Football Daily | Have laudable Leeds left the chaos behind them?

Football Daily | Have laudable Leeds left the chaos behind them?

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! It’s been quite the stomach-churning white-knuckle ride for Leeds United over the past decade. Their fans have been forced to endure more highs, lows, loops, corkscrews and rolls than a thrill-seeking visitor on Nemesis Reborn at Alton Towers. There have been b@nter eras, multiple owners, near-misses, promotions, relegations and managerial churn. The Marcelo Bielsa years will always be remembered as fondly as the Thomas Christiansen months have been erased from collective memory. Under Jesse Marsch, Leeds secured dramatic final-day Premier League survival at Brentford, before dropping through the trapdoor the following season despite the best efforts of the High Performance American and Lower Performance Javi Gracia and Big Sam Allardyce. After yet another VAR offside fiasco at the weekend ( yesterday’s Football Daily ), centering on whether a player diving towards the goal is active or not, can I suggest we take subjectivity out of the equation? We have this nice, already marked, box on the field which is used to decide how harshly punished a foul is. So can we not just say everyone in the penalty area is active, no matter what they’re doing, and judge offsides accordingly?” – Hugh Fordham. Re: Arsenal demanding a meeting with Pro Ref after a penalty decision (yesterday’s News, Bits and Bobs, full email edition). It should write to Mikel Arteta and ask why he feels the need to repeatedly leave his technical area. After all, ‘it is unacceptable at this level’” – Deryck Hall. Chris Brown’s observation that ‘Spurs’ front three right now pose about as much threat as a Muttley-SpongeBob-Sylvester the Cat trio’ ( yesterday’s Football Daily letters ) brought to mind the obvious conclusion that it’s not Messrs Lange and Venkatesham who are in charge of player investments, but Wile E Coyote. Spurs’ strategy seems to be just as sound as all Mr Coyote’s purchases from Acme Co in his private pursuits” – Peter Rehwaldt. Continue reading...
