Microsoft Launches $2,599 Surface Laptop Ultra to Take on MacBook Pro

Microsoft Launches $2,599 Surface Laptop Ultra to Take on MacBook Pro

Microsoft today announced launch timing and pricing for the Surface Laptop Ultra that it unveiled earlier this year. The 15-inch Surface Laptop Ultra is priced starting at $2,599, undercutting Apple's $2,999 16-inch MacBook Pro , and it targets the same creator and developer market. Microsoft says it is built for "demanding creative, software development, AI, engineering, and 3D workloads." Microsoft's new laptop uses an Nvidia RTX Spark chip, which includes an Nvidia Blackwell RTX GPU with up to 6,144 cores and an Nvidia Grace CPU with up to 20 cores. It supports up to 128GB of unified memory and has a new thermal architecture to support the hardware. The RTX Spark is an Arm-based chip, so the laptop runs Windows on Arm with x86 apps using Microsoft's Prism emulation. According to Microsoft, the Surface Laptop Ultra is its most powerful notebook to date. It has the "brightest, sharpest, and most vivid display" Microsoft has used in a Surface device, with peak HDR brightness that's 25% higher than the M5 ‌MacBook Pro‌'s. The mini-LED display is a touchscreen, and it supports gestures and navigation, but not pen input. The laptop is lighter than the 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌, with a large haptic trackpad and upgradeable storage. Microsoft even adopted a MagSafe equivalent, adding support for Magnetic Connect. Microsoft says Magnetic Connect is the "world's first built-in magnetic USB-C charging on a laptop." The device has three USB-C ports, a USB-A port, an HDMI port, an SD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Along with the Surface Laptop Ultra, Microsoft announced the $5,999 Surface RTX Spark Dev Box to compete with devices like the Mac Studio and Mac mini . It is equipped with an Nvidia RTX Spark chip and offers up to 1 petaflop of AI performance with support for AI models up to 120B parameters. Microsoft is offering a bonus to customers who "break up" with their MacBooks. MacBook owners can get up to $1,000 cash back when purchasing a Surface Laptop Ultra by trading in an eligible MacBook. The Surface Laptop Ultra launches on October 16. "We're confident that once today's creators and developers experience everything Surface Laptop Ultra has to offer, they won't look back," reads Microsoft's website. The Surface Laptop Ultra will directly compete with Apple's rumored OLED MacBook, which could also have an Ultra name. The MacBook Ultra is expected to feature a touchscreen, M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, and a thinner and lighter design. How Microsoft built its MacBook Pro competitor

How Microsoft built its MacBook Pro competitor

Before Microsoft releases a laptop to the public, it needs to put the device through its paces. That all happens inside a windowless, warehouse-like lab on the company's Redmond, Washington, campus, where the team developing Surface devices programs robots to press their buttons thousands of times, pelts devices with radio waves from giant antennas, and […]

12 New Things to Expect From Apple in October

12 New Things to Expect From Apple in October

October is about to become a very busy month for Apple, with the company set to release the iPhone Duo, both iOS 27.1 and iOS 27.2, and a new Mac Studio configuration with 512GB of RAM. In addition, up to seven more Apple products may be unveiled this month, including an all-new smart home hub, a new Apple TV 4K, a new HomePod mini, an iPad mini with an OLED display, MacBook Pro models with OLED displays, and more. Below, we have outlined 12 new things to expect from Apple in October. This article was published previously and updated with the latest rumors. Confirmed iPhone Duo: The foldable iPhone Duo launches on Friday, October 23. Pre-orders begin Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time. iOS 27.1: Apple said the iPhone Duo will ship with iOS 27.1 , so the software update is expected to be released before October 23. iOS 27.2: Apple jumped ahead to an iOS 27.2 beta because iOS 27.1 is dedicated to the iPhone Duo. iOS 27.2 adds support for the five additional Siri AI languages that Apple promised would be coming in October, so accordingly we can expect iOS 27.2 to be released at some point during the month. Mac Studio (512GB RAM): While the new Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips was released last week, Apple said a high-end configuration with the M5 Ultra and 512GB of RAM will be available in "late October ." Rumored The following three devices will be unveiled on Tuesday, October 13 , according to a report from Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman: Home hub: An all-new Apple smart home hub featuring Siri AI, a 6-inch to 7-inch square display, an A18 chip or newer for Apple Intelligence, FaceTime, and more. A new operating system will feature clock faces, widgets, and more. There will be a tabletop version with a speaker base and a wall-mounted version. ↳ homeOS: Apple's smart home hub is expected to run an all-new operating system that may be named homeOS, according to trademark filings. Apple TV 4K (4th Generation): A19 or A19 Pro chip , an increased 8GB to 12GB of RAM for Apple Intelligence and Siri AI support, an Apple-designed N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 support, and an updated Siri Remote . A leak revealed the new Apple TV will look the same as the existing model . HomePod mini 2: Newer chip, Siri AI support, improved sound quality, Apple's N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 support, a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, and new color options, including pink and green . No major design changes. Apple is planning to unveil a second set of new products in the final week of October , according to MacRumors sources. While we do not know exactly which products are coming at this time, it is likely that the following Macs will be announced: 14" and 16" MacBook Pro models with OLED displays: A major MacBook Pro redesign with an OLED display, touchscreen support, M5 Pro and M5 Max chips , a Dynamic Island , a thinner-and-lighter design , and potentially Apple's C1X or C2 modem for built-in cellular connectivity . 24" iMac: M6 chip and new color options . 14" MacBook Pro: M6 chip . A new iPad mini is also expected at some point in October: iPad mini 8: OLED display , A20 Pro chip , landscape front camera , redesigned speaker system , and water-resistant design . Apple has yet to announce an October event. When it held a "Scary Fast" event on October 30, 2023, Apple sent out invites six days prior , on October 24. Today is six days before the October 13 date that Apple reportedly plans to unveil an all-new home hub, so we shall see if history repeats itself and invites go out today. If there are no October events planned, then expect press releases on the Apple Newsroom website, along with shorter per-product YouTube videos and hands-on gatherings for selected journalists and content creators. macOS 27.2 Further Hints at MacBook With Touch-Enabled OLED Display

macOS 27.2 Further Hints at MacBook With Touch-Enabled OLED Display

The latest macOS 27.2 beta released this week further hints at the long-rumored MacBook with a touchscreen, which is expected to be unveiled by next month. Specifically, when you click and hold on an app icon in the Dock on the third developer beta of macOS 27.2, the icon gets a little bit larger. A similar animation occurs when you long press on an iOS or iPadOS app, so the fact that the animation now extends to macOS could be another subtle clue that a touch-enabled MacBook is coming. The new animation can be seen in videos shared by @madeby_ldt and @craigapplecom . macOS 27.2 beta 3 introduces a new long-press animation for Dock icons, hinting at the upcoming touchscreen MacBook Pro https://t.co/4zfZOxy8MO — ldt (@madeby_ldt) October 5, 2026 The latest macOS 27.2 beta added other new touch gestures as well, so it seems pretty clear that Apple is gearing up for the first touch-enabled Macs. In particular, Apple reportedly plans to release new higher-end, higher-priced 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro or "MacBook Ultra" models with touchscreens in October or November . In addition to a touch-enabled OLED display, these Macs are expected to feature M5 Pro and M5 Max chips , a thinner-and-lighter design , a Dynamic Island , and potentially Apple's C1X or C2 modem for built-in cellular connectivity . Sources: Apple Planning Two Sets of Product Launches in October

Apple is planning to unveil additional new products in the final week of October, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. While we do not know exactly which products Apple plans to announce in the final week of October, the most likely possibilities are all Macs, including the long-rumored "MacBook Ultra" models with OLED displays and a thinner-and-lighter design , a base model 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M6 chip , and an iMac with an M6 chip . Apple also previously announced that it will be releasing a high-end Mac Studio configuration with the M5 Ultra chip and 512GB of RAM in " late October ." Another new product expected this October is a new iPad mini with an OLED display, an A20 Pro chip, a landscape front camera, a redesigned speaker system, and more. It is unclear if the device will be announced alongside new home products on October 13, alongside new Macs in the final week of October, or at some other point this month. All in all, it appears that Apple has two sets of product launches planned for this October, and that is on top of the iPhone Duo launching on Friday, October 23. Get ready, as it is about to be a busy couple of weeks in the world of Apple. MacBook Pro With OLED Display Rumored to Be 'Significantly Lighter'

MacBook Pro With OLED Display Rumored to Be 'Significantly Lighter'

Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman today said the new MacBook Pro models with OLED displays will be "significantly lighter" than the existing MacBook Pro models. "Apple has reengineered the machine's interior, miniaturizing parts and rearranging components to make the computer much easier to carry," he said, in his Power On newsletter . Currently, the MacBook Pro weighs up to 4.7 pounds, while the MacBook Air weighs up to 3.3 pounds and the MacBook Neo weighs 2.7 pounds. With this newly-reported detail, the new models are now rumored to have six new features: OLED display Touch-screen capabilities Dynamic Island instead of a notch M5 Pro and M5 Max chips Thinner design "Significantly lighter" design Thinner and lighter go hand in hand. Apple plans to release the MacBook Pro models with OLED displays in October or November this year, according to Gurman. In his newsletter, he reiterated that Apple is testing the laptops with macOS 27.2, which is currently in beta . MacBook Pro With OLED Touch Screen Rumored to Launch in October or November

MacBook Pro With OLED Touch Screen Rumored to Launch in October or November

In his first-ever Power On podcast today, Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman said that he believes Apple will introduce its long-rumored 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with touch-enabled OLED displays in October or November this year. "Apple, I believe, will introduce its first touchscreen MacBook Pro this fall, as early as October," he said. "It could slip to November, but as early as October." Apple is testing the laptops with macOS 27.2, which is currently in beta, he added. The software update is expected to be released towards the end of October, so the touch-screen MacBook Pro models might be announced later this month. Other rumored features beyond an OLED touch screen include Apple's existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, a thinner design, and a Dynamic Island instead of a notch. A few years ago, Gurman reported that Apple was looking into the idea of cellular Macs that would be able to connect to a 5G or LTE network without relying on an iPhone's hotspot. For this reason, some Apple fans are hopeful that the touch-screen MacBook Pro models will be equipped with the company's custom-designed C1X or C2 modem. The touch-screen models are expected to be positioned above the regular 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, which will reportedly jump to the M7 Pro and M7 Max chips next year. It is unclear if the touch-screen models will still have MacBook Pro branding, or if Apple will opt for something unique like MacBook Ultra. M6 Chip Benchmark Surfaces Ahead of New Mac Mini Launch Next Week

M6 Chip Benchmark Surfaces Ahead of New Mac Mini Launch Next Week

The first unverified benchmark result for Apple's new M6 chip surfaced in the Geekbench 7 database today, offering a look at the chip's performance gains. The new Mac mini will be Apple's first device to be equipped with the M6 chip, which is 2nm. Here is how the M6 chip scored: Single-core CPU score: 4,071 Multi-core CPU score: 22,783 Here are the average M5 chip scores for comparison: Single-core CPU score: 3,641 Multi-core CPU score: 17,948 If this single Geekbench 7 result is accurate, the M6 chip has up to around 12% faster single-core CPU performance and up to around 27% faster multi-core CPU performance compared to the M5 chip. Note that the M6 chip is in the new Mac mini, while the M5 chip scores are based on the 14-inch MacBook Pro, but performance should be similar. Apple said the M6 chip has the world's fastest single-threaded CPU performance, and its 4,071 single-core score indeed tops all other Macs and PCs in the Geekbench 7 database, including the M5 Max chip (3,731) and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme (3,396). Up to 27% faster multi-core CPU performance is in line with Apple's claim of up to 1.2× faster multi-threaded performance, so all of Apple's advertised claims hold up. Here is where the M6 chip slots in for maximum multi-core CPU performance: M5 Ultra: TBD M3 Ultra: 39,059 M5 Max: 35,119 M5 Pro: 33,593 M4 Max: 29,047 M4 Pro: 24,894 M6 chip: 22,783 M5 chip: 17,948 M4 chip: 15,477 M3 chip: 11,650 M2 chip: 9,809 M1 chip: 8,582 Based on these scores, the M6 chip is more than 2.5× faster than Apple's original M1 chip. The new Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro chips and the new Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips launch on Tuesday, September 22. We are still waiting for GPU results for the M6 chip to appear in the Geekbench 7 database, and for M5 Ultra chip benchmarks. New Apple TV, HomePod Mini, and More on Track to Launch This Year

The rumor that never ends: Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman today reiterated that new Apple TV and HomePod mini models with Siri AI support remain on track to launch this year. Other new products he expects this year: an all-new Apple home hub, an updated entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M6 chip, an iMac with an M6 chip, and an iPad mini with an OLED display. Apple often announces new products in October, so hopefully we can soon finally stop talking about the next Apple TV and HomePod mini, which have seemingly been "coming soon" for several years. MacBook Pro With OLED Touch Screen Running macOS 27.1 Inside Apple

Apple's rumored 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with touch-enabled OLED displays are currently being tested with macOS 27.1, which is scheduled for release in late October, according to the latest word from Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman . While he previously said these high-end MacBook Pro models would be released in either late 2026 or early 2027 , Gurman's latest report today has the laptops firmly within a list of products coming "later this year," so it would appear that he is now more confident that Apple is planning to release them before the end of 2026. Other rumored features for these MacBook Pro models include M5 Pro and M5 Max chips , a thinner design, and a Dynamic Island instead of a notch. Macworld previously reported that these laptops would have MacBook Ultra branding , but that same report incorrectly said the iPhone Duo would be named the iPhone Ultra. In any case, the first-generation MacBook Pro models with OLED displays are expected to be distinct, higher-priced models that sit above the regular 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, which are expected to jump to the M7 Pro and M7 Max chips next year. The first developer beta of macOS 27.1 will likely be released in the coming days. Apple Still Has 8 More Products to Announce Later This Year

Apple's annual iPhone event is now in the rearview mirror, but it still has many more products to announce later this year, according to rumors. Apple is expected to unveil the following eight products this year, although the MacBook Pro with an OLED display might not arrive until early 2027. iPad iPad mini: A19 Pro or A20 Pro chip , an OLED display , a new speaker system without holes , and a water-resistant design . Apple debuted the A20 Pro chip in the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo earlier this week. Mac iMac: M6 chip and new color options . Apple announced the M6 chip last month. MacBook Pro: A new 14-inch MacBook Pro base model with an M6 chip . MacBook Pro/MacBook Ultra with OLED display: A major MacBook Pro redesign in late 2026 or early 2027, with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips , an OLED display, a touch screen, a Dynamic Island, and a thinner design. While this rumor is far less certain, it has also been said that it might be possible to configure the MacBook Ultra with the M5 Ultra chip that debuted last month . Home Apple TV: At least five new features , including an A17 Pro chip or newer, an increased 8GB of RAM for Apple Intelligence, Siri AI support, an Apple-designed N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 support, and an updated Siri Remote. The new Apple TV will apparently look similar to the existing model, so do not expect any major design changes. HomePod mini: Newer chip with Siri AI support, improved sound quality, Apple's N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 support, a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, and potentially new color options like red . The new HomePod mini will apparently look similar to the existing model, so do not expect any major design changes. Home Hub: An all-new smart home hub featuring Siri AI, a 6-inch to 7-inch square display, an A18 chip or newer for Apple Intelligence, FaceTime, and more. A new operating system will feature clock faces, widgets, and more. There will a tabletop version with a speaker base and a wall-mounted version.
