Three Years of 80% Charge Limits on iPhone: The Results

Three Years of 80% Charge Limits on iPhone: The Results

Since 2023, Apple's newer iPhones have had an 80 percent charge limit for those who want to extend battery lifespan. Charging to 80 percent instead of 100 percent is supposed to put less stress on the battery, improving longevity. For the last three years, I've used that setting on my iPhone. I started with the iPhone 15 Pro Max , then did the iPhone 16 Pro Max , and most recently, the iPhone 17 Pro Max. After 12 months at an 80 percent maximum charge, my iPhone 17 Pro Max is at 97 percent maximum capacity with a cycle count of 277. Last year, my iPhone 16 Pro Max was at 94 percent capacity after 12 months, and in 2024, my iPhone 15 Pro Max was also at 94 percent capacity. During the year I tested the ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro Max, I tried not to let the battery dip below 20 percent. This year, I did the same thing, but I also tried to do more charging over USB-C than Qi2 or MagSafe . I'm not sure if that helped, but 97 percent capacity is the best result I've had yet with the charge limit turned on. I don't know how my battery result compares to others, but if you've kept yours at 100 percent, you can compare your capacity to mine to see if there's any real difference. Apple transitioned to aluminum and added vapor chamber cooling with the ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro Max, and I did think my iPhone spent less time uncomfortably warm than the ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro Max. It may be that the vapor chamber cooling made the biggest difference and limiting wireless charging didn't matter. I don't use the iPhone 15 Pro Max or the ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro Max as my main iPhones anymore, but I do use them daily as test devices. They still have the 80 percent limit turned on, so I can share some longer-term battery results. iPhone 15 Pro Max (36 months) - 88%, 369 cycles ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro Max (24 months) - 93%, 343 cycles ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro Max (12 months) - 97%, 277 cycles Last year, my ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro Max hit 299 cycles by September 24. This year, I'm only at 277 cycles. It's nearly two weeks later than I usually report results too, so the larger battery meant less charging. The ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro Max has a bigger battery and faster charging than the ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro Max, so an 80 percent charge limit wasn't as difficult to live with as it was in the past. I rarely ran out of battery, though I did still bring a battery pack with me most places. My favorite battery packs right now are the ones with built-in USB-C cables, especially those that can attach to my iPhone magnetically but charge it over USB-C. It's faster charging that's still convenient. I also continue to be a fan of the super-slim battery packs that add little bulk and weight to an iPhone. For the iPhone 15 Pro Max and ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro Max, I didn't think sacrificing a fifth of my battery was worth the capacity I ended up with, and that's still mostly the case. I'm guessing my 97 percent capacity isn't too far off from the battery health readings on iPhones that didn't have the charge limit turned on. As for older devices, my two-year-old ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro Max only lost 1 percent capacity from 2025 to 2026, and my iPhone 15 Pro Max didn't lose any capacity at all during the year. Both phones had fewer battery cycles (44 and 17, respectively), but they're holding capacity even after sitting dead for short periods of time throughout the year. The most hands-off way to manage battery health is to use Optimized Battery Charging, since it minimizes time spent at 100 percent battery while still charging to full. Setting an 80 percent limit and then turning it off on days you need 100 percent is also a good compromise that could save you battery capacity over time. Apple has 90 and 95 percent options too, which might be a better choice. My iPhone 18 Pro Max is already set to 80 percent, so I'll check in again in September 2027. I'm going to stick with USB-C charging when I can, and I'm curious how the even bigger battery will affect longevity and what the 80 percent limit is like day to day. What's your iPhone battery capacity and cycle count? Share it in the comments below and weigh in on whether you think battery charge limits are worthwhile. Apple and AT&T Have Yet to Explain Cause of iPhone 18 Pro Max Issue

Apple and AT&T Have Yet to Explain Cause of iPhone 18 Pro Max Issue

In a statement shared with MacRumors on Friday, Apple said that iPhone 18 Pro Max users who have experienced an issue where AT&T cellular service does not work will need to have the device replaced , as the issue apparently cannot be fixed with a software update once it has occurred. That is a big deal, as it hints at hardware failure, but we lack details since Apple and AT&T have yet to disclose the underlying cause of the issue. A spokesperson for AT&T directed us to Apple, which has yet to respond to our latest request for comment. It is possible that Apple is still investigating the issue, but so far our follow-up questions have been met with radio silence (pun intended). In the meantime, all we know is that Apple said iOS 27.0.1 and an AT&T carrier settings update released last week "are meant to help prevent this issue from occurring," so iPhone 18 Pro Max users who have not experienced this issue should ensure that both of these updates are installed immediately to avoid potential future impacts. To install iOS 27.0.1, open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap General → Software Update. The carrier settings update for the iPhone 18 Pro Max will automatically download for AT&T users within the next 14 days, according to Apple. To manually trigger the update, users can open the Settings app and tap General → About. Apple said it has only observed this issue with iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network. No other iPhone models or carriers are known to be impacted. Notably, U.S. models of the iPhone 18 Pro Max rely on Qualcomm's Snapdragon X80 modem for cellular connectivity, while variants of the device sold in all other countries are equipped with Apple's custom C2 modem. It is unclear if this modem difference is a factor in this AT&T issue, or if the overlap is merely a coincidence. We have reached out to Qualcomm and will share the company's response, if any. Apple said a "small number" of iPhone 18 Pro Max users experienced this AT&T issue, which prevents phone calls, text messages, and cellular data from working. A "small number" is Apple's standard wording for these types of issues. Thousands of users have complained about the issue across the Apple Support Community and other platforms. iPhone 13 Pro vs. iPhone 18 Pro Buyer's Guide: Is It Worth Upgrading?

iPhone 13 Pro vs. iPhone 18 Pro Buyer's Guide: Is It Worth Upgrading?

Apple released the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026, five years after the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The 2021 models introduced ProMotion displays, macro photography, a 3x Telephoto camera, and substantially longer battery life than their predecessors. They remain capable phones and support iOS 27 , but owners now have five generations of upgrades to consider. The iPhone 14 Pro brought the Dynamic Island , an Always-On display, a 48-megapixel Main camera, and Emergency SOS via satellite. The iPhone 15 Pro introduced the Action button and USB-C. The iPhone 16 Pro added larger displays, the Camera Control, a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera, and expanded video capabilities. The iPhone 17 Pro adopted an aluminum unibody with vapor chamber cooling and upgraded the Telephoto and front-facing cameras. This year's iPhone 18 Pro adds the A20 Pro chip, a variable-aperture Main camera, a smaller ‌Dynamic Island‌, and further gains in battery life and charging speed. For an iPhone 13 Pro owner, these changes accumulate across nearly every part of the phone. In the United States, the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ starts at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299, each with 256GB of storage. That is $200 more than the corresponding iPhone 13 Pro model's 2021 starting price, although the older phones started with 128GB. Apple no longer sells the iPhone 13 Pro, so anyone buying one now will be looking at a used or refurbished device. For most iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max owners ready to replace their phone, the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ is a very worthwhile upgrade. Five years of changes bring noticeable improvements to battery life, charging, outdoor display visibility, photography, and connectivity. The iPhone 13 Pro already has ProMotion and a capable three-camera system, but those strengths do not erase the breadth of the newer model's improvements. Battery life may be the most immediate benefit, especially for an iPhone 13 Pro whose original battery has aged. Faster wired charging and USB-C also make the newer phone easier to live with, particularly if your other devices already use USB-C. The camera upgrade is substantial across the whole system. All three rear cameras move from 12 to 48 megapixels, while the variable-aperture Main camera adds creative control and the Telephoto camera extends from 3x to 4x, with an additional optical-quality 8x option. The higher-resolution front camera, autofocus, and Center Stage are useful for group photos and video calls. Video creators gain considerably more through higher frame rates, improved Cinematic mode, external recording, and professional formats. The A20 Pro and vapor chamber make the strongest performance case for demanding games, long recording sessions, and other sustained work. The ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ also supports ‌Apple Intelligence‌, while the iPhone 13 Pro does not, even though both run ‌iOS 27‌. The main physical trade-offs are size and weight: both ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ models are taller, thicker, and slightly heavier. Some users may find the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌'s aluminum chassis to be more vulnerable to dents and damage, even though the front and rear glass is stronger. U.S. buyers who rely on a physical SIM must also move to eSIM. If you need to delay a new purchase, replacing an iPhone 13 Pro's battery can extend its usefulness. For owners prepared to buy now, however, the accumulated improvements make upgrading easy to justify. Apple Says iPhone 18 Pro Max Users With AT&T Cellular Issue Need to Have Device Replaced

Apple Says iPhone 18 Pro Max Users With AT&T Cellular Issue Need to Have Device Replaced

Apple today confirmed that a "small number" of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network have experienced an issue that causes the device to lose cellular service, thereby preventing phone calls, text messages, and data from working. Thousands of users complained about the issue across the Apple Support Community and other platforms. Apple said it released iOS 27.0.1 earlier this week and an AT&T carrier settings update earlier today to help prevent more iPhone 18 Pro Max users from being impacted by this issue going forward. In a statement shared with MacRumors , Apple strongly encouraged all iPhone 18 Pro Max users to update to iOS 27.0.1 now. To install the update, open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap on General → Software Update. The carrier settings update for the iPhone 18 Pro Max will automatically download for AT&T users over the next 14 days, according to Apple. To manually trigger the update, users can open the Settings app and tap on General → About. Apple's full statement: We have identified an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network that may cause a device to lose service and be unable to make calls. We released iOS 27.0.1 earlier this week and strongly encourage all iPhone 18 Pro Max users to update now, and are also issuing a carrier settings update today. These updates together are meant to help prevent this issue from occurring. Notably, Apple said that iPhone 18 Pro Max devices that have been affected by this cellular issue on the AT&T network cannot have service reactivated with a software update. Instead, Apple said the device must be replaced entirely, and it advises affected customers to contact Apple Support or AT&T, or visit an Apple Store or AT&T location. Apple said it has only observed this issue with iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network. No other iPhone models or carriers are known to be impacted. Apple did not disclose the underlying cause of the issue. U.S. models of the iPhone 18 Pro Max rely on Qualcomm's Snapdragon X85 modem for cellular connectivity, while variants of the device sold in all other countries are equipped with Apple's custom C2 modem. It is unclear if this modem difference is a factor in this AT&T issue. It is also unclear if there will eventually be an Apple Service Program dedicated to this issue. In the meantime, it sounds like Apple Stores will replace affected iPhone 18 Pro Max devices for free, so book an appointment with the Genius Bar if necessary. AT&T and Apple Just Took Steps Toward Fixing iPhone 18 Pro Max Issue

AT&T and Apple Just Took Steps Toward Fixing iPhone 18 Pro Max Issue

AT&T and Apple are taking action today as they try to resolve iPhone 18 Pro Max cellular issues, according to MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris. Thousands of iPhone 18 Pro Max users have been unable to connect to the AT&T network for phone calls, text messages, and data. The underlying cause has yet to be disclosed, but AT&T and Apple continue to work toward a resolution. First, Apple today released an AT&T carrier settings update (version 72.1, up from 72.0.2) for iPhones. Given the timing of this update, it presumably includes some optimizations related to iPhone 18 Pro Max cellular connectivity, but it is unclear if AT&T has fully resolved the issues or if further tweaks will be necessary. When a carrier settings update is available on your iPhone, you will be prompted to install it. If you dismiss the notification or do not see it, open the Settings app, tap General → About, and the update should appear there. You can see your iPhone's current carrier settings version in the same About menu, next to your carrier's name. Second, Apple today started requiring iPhone 18 Pro Max users to install iOS 27.0.1 in order to set up the device, even though most if not all affected users have said that the update does not resolve the issues. A leaked AT&T email said iOS 27.0.1 is meant to help mitigate future impacts, so it may still help in some way. In a statement shared with MacRumors today, AT&T said it is "working with Apple" on this. Apple did not respond to our request for comment. It is not yet clear if a follow-up update like iOS 27.0.2 will be required as part of a fix, or if the carrier update alone will be sufficient. AT&T on iPhone 18 Pro Max Issues: 'We Are Working With Apple'

AT&T on iPhone 18 Pro Max Issues: 'We Are Working With Apple'

In a statement shared with MacRumors today, AT&T said it is "working with Apple" to resolve iPhone 18 Pro Max cellular issues. "Apple has released a software update to address an issue that may affect calls, data, texts, and 911 calls on a small number of Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max phones," an AT&T spokesperson said. "AT&T customers with an iPhone 18 Pro Max should update their phones now to the latest available software. Our top priority is ensuring customers can stay connected when they need it most, and we are working with Apple to make it right." As we reported last week , affected iPhone 18 Pro Max users are unable to connect to the AT&T network for phone calls, text messages, or data either persistently or intermittently, and their devices typically enter SOS mode as a result. The underlying cause has not been confirmed, and Apple has yet to publicly comment on the matter. Thousands of users have experienced this problem since the iPhone 18 Pro Max launched on September 18, according to discussion threads across the Apple Support Community , Reddit , MacRumors Forums , and other online platforms. Notably, the U.S. version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone unveiled last month that is equipped with a Qualcomm cellular modem . The smaller iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo are equipped with Apple's C2 modem worldwide, as is the iPhone 18 Pro Max in all other countries. However, it is unclear if this is a contributing factor. AT&T said iPhone 18 Pro Max users who have experienced or continue to experience issues can return to an Apple or AT&T store for additional support. Yesterday, AT&T sent a text message to some customers advising them to update to iOS 27.0.1 immediately , even though that update does not appear to resolve the issues, according to comments shared by affected users. In an alleged internal email shared on Reddit today, AT&T clarified that its guidance about updating to iOS 27.0.1 is meant to help mitigate future impacts, but it is unclear if or how the update actually helps. Apple's release notes for iOS 27.0.1 only mentioned fixes for other bugs, including a Face ID issue affecting iPhone 18 Pro models. The alleged email added that customers can visit an Apple or AT&T store for a replacement device, but some customers said their request for a replacement under warranty was declined. With this issue becoming more widespread, hopefully Apple and AT&T are working to inform employees about the issue and implement a formal process. iPhone 18 Pro Max users should be aware that today is the final day to return the device to Apple under the company's standard 14-day return policy in the U.S., for customers who purchased or received it on September 18 launch day. Typically, Apple is able to address issues like these with software updates, so hopefully it will be able to fix the issue in iOS 27.0.2 or later. Hardware issues are more rare, but when they do happen, Apple sometimes launches a free repair program . We will continue to provide further updates on this topic as more information becomes available. AT&T Acknowledges iPhone 18 Pro Max Issues: 'Update Immediately'

AT&T Acknowledges iPhone 18 Pro Max Issues: 'Update Immediately'

In a text message sent to customers today, AT&T acknowledged that some iPhone 18 Pro Max devices on its network are experiencing cellular issues . AT&T said that customers should immediately update to iOS 27.0.1 , despite the fact that many affected users have said that the update does not resolve the issues. There are now at least thousands of users that are experiencing this problem, according to discussion topics across the Apple Support Community , Reddit , and MacRumors Forums . Here is what the text message says: Hi, it's AT&T. Action needed: An important Apple software update for your iPhone 18 Pro Max is available. Some phones may be unable to complete calls/text/data, including to 911. Update to iOS 27.0.1 immediately — Settings > General > Software Update. Please contact AT&T or Apple if you have questions. Apple's release notes for iOS 27.0.1 did not mention a fix for AT&T cellular issues. Rather, the update fixed a Face ID issue on the iPhone 18 Pro models. As we reported last week, affected iPhone 18 Pro Max users are unable to connect to the AT&T network for phone calls, text messages, or data either persistently or intermittently, and their devices typically enter SOS mode as a result. The underlying cause has not been confirmed, and Apple has yet to publicly comment on the matter. The smaller iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo are equipped with Apple's C2 modem worldwide, as is the iPhone 18 Pro Max in all other countries. However, it is unclear if this is a contributing factor. If a software issue is identified, then another update such as iOS 27.0.2 may be required. If there is a hardware issue, though, then this would obviously be a much bigger problem. We will provide further updates as new information becomes available. (P.S. There is some irony in AT&T sending a text message to warn iPhone 18 Pro Max users that they might not be able to send or receive text messages.) Huawei made a whole camera to attach to its latest phone

Over the last few years, Chinese Android manufacturers have followed Vivo's example of launching add-on "teleconverter" lenses for their flagship phones, enabling long-distance photography that the phones on their own could never match. Today, Huawei one-upped everybody with the add-on lens for its Mate 90 Pro Max flagship, which is not only a comically huge […]

Huawei unveils Mate 90 phones, leans on homegrown chip design to offset US curbs

Huawei unveils Mate 90 phones, leans on homegrown chip design to offset US curbs

BEIJING: Huawei Technologies unveiled its Mate 90 smartphone series on Thursday, betting on its in-house operating system and redesigned chip architecture to boost its performance in the face of US curbs on shipments of advanced semiconductors. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday ahead of the launch, Huawei consumer business chief Richard Yu said the company still faces constraints in the supply of advanced chips. "Advanced semiconductor capacity remains very limited in China, and Huawei's Ascend AI chips also draw on that same capacity," Yu said. "The capacity for smartphone chips remains tight, even though rising smartphone prices have curbed shipment volumes (for handsets)." The launch will test whether Huawei can keep advancing its smartphone lineup despite US restrictions that have limited its access to cutting-edge chipmaking tools, forcing the company to develop alternative ways to boost processor performance. The Mate 90 series succeeds the Mate 80 line launched in November 2025. Premium models, including the Mate 90 Pro Max, are powered by Huawei's Kirin 9050 Pro, a system-on-chip built with a technique Huawei calls "LogicFolding". The method restructures ‌a chip's internal wiring in three dimensions rather than the conventional flat, two-dimensional layout, allowing for denser, faster processing - though it requires more wafers to produce. Eric Xu, Huawei's rotating chairman, said at a media event in Shanghai last month that supply of the company's Ascend 950 AI chips could not meet domestic demand due ‌to capacity constraints. Yu said China's advanced chipmaking still relies on deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines, and that while extreme ultraviolet (EUV) ‌technology is "valuable", Chinese manufacturers are still working towards it. Huawei would use more chips built with the LogicFolding technique in future smartphones, Yu said. Huawei ‌did not disclose who manufactures the Kirin 9050 ‌Pro. Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), China's top logic foundry, is widely believed to produce the Kirin chips used in Huawei's Mate series as well as its Ascend AI processors. SMIC did not respond to a request for comment. Huawei's latest phones run on ‌its homegrown, Android-free HarmonyOS 7 operating system, which Huawei says supports more than 450,000 apps and services. The Mate 90 Pro Max with 16 GB of memory and 512 GB of storage will be priced at 9,999 yuan ($1,491), 2,000 yuan more than the same version of its predecessor at launch. The standard and Pro models start at 5,999 yuan and 6,999 yuan, respectively. Huawei said the top-end Mate 90 models deliver a 31% increase in overall performance over the previous flagship generation. Higher prices for handsets Chinese smartphone makers are grappling with rising memory and component costs, leading them to raise prices and shift more shipments toward premium models. Yu said rising memory prices had added an average of $200 to the cost of each handset, weighing on Huawei's profit margins. "We have to increase prices as well, yet at a slower pace," Yu said. China's domestic smartphone shipments fell 7% year-on-year between January and August, even as Huawei's shipments in the country rose 13%, according to research firm International Data Corporation (IDC). The average selling price of smartphones in China climbed 11.3% year-on-year in the second quarter to $543, while the average price of Huawei smartphones declined 14.7% to $628, IDC data showed. Apple vs Huawei foldable Apple announced its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, last month, entering a category long dominated by Samsung Electronics and Chinese rivals such as Huawei. Yu said he welcomed Apple's entry to the market. "I am ‌very pleased to see the launch of a similar product by our peers," Yu said. Huawei currently holds about a 75% share in China's foldable phone market, he said. "Between September 10 and 13, our Pura X Max foldable phone sales shot up 76% week-on-week right after Apple Duo's launch," Yu said, adding that shipments of the Pura X Max, which is similar in size to the iPhone Duo, had topped 1.2 million units in China since its April release. Apple is expected to ship 6 million iPhone Duo units in 2026, with China - the world's largest market for foldable phones - accounting for nearly a quarter of that total, according to data from Counterpoint Research.

Apple Releases iOS 27.0.1 With Face ID Bug Fix

Apple Releases iOS 27.0.1 With Face ID Bug Fix

Apple today released iOS 27.0.1, the first update for the iOS 27 update that came out two weeks ago . iOS 27.0.1 can be downloaded over the air by going to Settings > General > Software Update. Apple has also released iPadOS 27.0.1 and visionOS 27.0.1 updates, as well as iOS and iPadOS 26.7.1 updates for devices not updated to iOS and iPadOS 27 . According to Apple's release notes, iOS 27.0.1 addresses an issue that could cause Face ID not to work properly on the iPhone 18 Pro . Some iPhone 18 Pro users have complained that authentication can fail to work for things like unlocking a locked app. In some cases, the device freezes up and then reboots. Other users have seen a "‌Face ID‌ is Not Available" message when attempting ‌Face ID‌ setup, and others have experienced issues with the Require Attention for ‌Face ID‌ setting. Apple's release notes for the update are below. This update provides bug fixes for your iPhone, including fixes for the following issues: - iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may unexpectedly restart when Face ID fails to authenticate - A color artifact may appear on photos captured at 2x under certain lighting conditions at f/1.48 on a small number of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max devices - Opening Notification Center and Control Center simultaneously may cause the touchscreen to become unresponsive The ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ models have an infrared camera that's under the display for the first time, but it's unclear if the hardware has been causing a problem. Apple said last week that it would be able to address the ‌Face ID‌ bugs with a software update. While the iOS 27.0.1 update has multiple ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ bug fixes, it is available for all iPhones able to run ‌iOS 27‌. Some iPhone 18 Pro Max Users Experiencing AT&T Cellular Issues

Some iPhone 18 Pro Max Users Experiencing AT&T Cellular Issues

A subset of iPhone 18 Pro Max users in the U.S. are experiencing issues with AT&T cellular connectivity and/or eSIM provisioning, according to complains across the MacRumors Forums , Reddit , and the Apple Support Community . Affected users are unable to connect to the AT&T network for phone calls, text messages, or data. Notably, the U.S. version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone released this month that is equipped with a Qualcomm cellular modem . The smaller iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo are equipped with Apple's C2 modem worldwide, as is the iPhone 18 Pro Max in all other countries. However, it is unclear if this is a contributing factor. Apple is currently testing iOS 27.0.1 , which is expected to be released next week , and hopefully it includes a carrier update that resolves these AT&T issues. Qualcomm Announces Renewed Agreement With Apple

Qualcomm Announces Renewed Agreement With Apple

Qualcomm today announced the renewal of its global patent licensing agreement with Apple, effective April 1, 2027. No further details were provided. This patent agreement is separate from Qualcomm's agreement to supply Apple with cellular modems for smartphone launches through 2026, so we expect Apple's transition to its own custom-designed modems to continue. Among the latest iPhone models, only the U.S. version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max still has a Qualcomm modem . The smaller iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo are equipped with Apple's C2 modem worldwide, as is the iPhone 18 Pro Max in all countries beyond the U.S., while cellular models of the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air use Apple's previous-generation C1X modem. Apple Quietly Excludes Older iPhones From New Camera Feature

Apple Quietly Excludes Older iPhones From New Camera Feature

Apple's new Texture and Grain controls for Photographic Styles are not available on iPhones other than the latest iPhone 18 Pro models and upcoming iPhone Duo, despite the company's original wording suggesting otherwise. When Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max earlier this month, its Newsroom press release said the new Texture and Grain controls would be "available in iOS 27 on iPhone models that support the latest generation of Photographic Styles." That original wording is preserved in copies of Apple's launch-day press release distributed through Business Wire and Notice Nearby . Elsewhere, in Apple's User Guide for iOS 27, devices that support the "latest generation Photographic Styles" are listed as the iPhone 16 series, iPhone 17 series, iPhone Air, and iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple has since changed the footnote on its iPhone 18 Pro Newsroom announcement. It now says Texture and Grain controls are available "only for photos captured on iPhone 18 Pro models and with the Ultra Wide, Main, and Center Stage cameras on the iPhone Duo." Apple also states definitively in its iOS 27 User Guide that changing the texture of a photo can be achieved "on iPhone 18 Pro models." wtf? Apple now says that the texture and grain will NOT be coming to older iPhones there's no reason why this shouldn't be coming to older iPhones this is what i despise about Apple. new software camera features almost never make it to older iPhones, even though those are... https://t.co/8FM6MQV01F pic.twitter.com/yiO1nDiuFF — Noah Cat (@Cartidise) September 22, 2026 Whether Apple initially intended to bring the controls to older devices and subsequently changed its plans is unclear, and Apple has not commented on the revision. Either way, the original compatibility information looks like it was published in error. Photographic Styles are tone presets that adjust the color and warmth of a photo, while preserving skin tones. If you have an iPhone 18 Pro, check out our how-to guide to make the most out of the feature . Some iPhone 18 Pro Users Experiencing Face ID Issues

Some iPhone 18 Pro Users Experiencing Face ID Issues

Apple's new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max began arriving to customers on Friday, and unfortunately some early adopters are experiencing Face ID issues. According to a Reddit post spotted by 9to5Mac , Face ID authentication for specific actions such as unlocking a locked app sometimes fails to work on the iPhone 18 Pro models, and the device then freezes and eventually reboots to the lock screen. It is unclear how widespread this problem is, but it can be hit or miss and not all users are affected. In addition, some MacRumors forum members are experiencing other Face ID issues on the iPhone 18 Pro models. First, some are receiving a "Face ID is Not Available" message when attempting to set up Face ID, and others have noted that the devices do not always seem to be respecting the "Require Attention for Face ID" setting when it is enabled. Apple moved Face ID's infrared camera underneath the top-left corner of the display on the iPhone 18 Pro models to achieve a smaller Dynamic Island on the devices. It is unclear if this hardware change is related to these Face ID issues, but it is likely that Apple will eventually resolve any new Face ID bugs in a future iOS 27 update.
