Catholic school faces same-sex discrimination claim

PITTSBURGH — A federal court in Pennsylvania denied a Roman Catholic school’s motion for summary judgment on a former teacher’s claim that he was fired for being married to another man. The school’s religious exemptions do not shield it from a sex discrimination claim, and factual disputes remain over whether the teacher’s largely secular position qualifies for the First Amendment’s ministerial exception.

From Super Bowl champ to master architect: Mike Tomlin’s sprawling Minecraft city is magnificent

The former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach took 12 years to build a city filled with stadiums, skyscrapers and bespoke homes. It is a marvel We may finally have cracked the case as to why the Pittsburgh Steelers stagnated so much over the final years of Mike Tomlin’s tenure as head coach: he was focused on virtual urban planning. I’m kidding, of course. It’s good when people in high-pressure jobs have creative hobbies. Count this writer (and his interior designer wife) among those who were gobsmacked on Wednesday night by Tomlin’s reveal of a 12-year-long project in Minecraft, the world-building game. Tomlin had teased that during his coaching career, he took up Minecraft city-building as a way to connect with his young children. We have now seen the fruits of that labor, and they are magnificent . Look my my works, Terry Bradshaw, and despair. Continue reading...

NFL roundup: Commanders stun Seahawks as late fumble hands Steelers victory over Bengals

NFL roundup: Commanders stun Seahawks as late fumble hands Steelers victory over Bengals

Cincinnati’s unbeaten start ends in Pittsburgh Drake Maye’s turnover woes continue for Pats Marcus Mariota threw three touchdown passes, and Kain Medrano returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown to help the Washington Commanders (1-2) hand Seattle (2-1) their first loss since last November. The Seahawks had won 12 straight, including their postseason run to last season’s Super Bowl title , but Mariota was solid in place of the injured Jayden Daniels, and three crucial turnovers enabled Washington to win their home opener. Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught 10 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns for the Seahawks, and he even completed a short throw on a trick play in the final quarter. Continue reading...

NFL week three: Chiefs at Dolphins, Chargers at Bills, Patriots at Jaguars, and more – live

Live updates from the 6pm BST games around the NFL Get in touch: mail Graham about all the latest matches So what has been the difference for Cincinnati on defense? The acquisition of tackle Dexter Lawrence from the New York Giants. The Bengals traded the 10th overall pick for him in the offseason as they searched for an elite gamechanger. And they seem to have found exactly that after beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Texans. Lawrence has been a rock solid base for Cincinnati to go to work and lead the NFL in both sacks (eight) and turnovers (three). Lawrence and company will be feeling good about continuing their impressive start against the Pittsburgh Steelers today. Mike McCarthy’s team are 1-1 but struggling on offense and have retooled the whole right side of their offensive line to remedy having scored the league’s fewest points (23) after two games. Bad language: profane Trump brings presidential swearing out into open

President has let rip with swearwords in recent months, redefining norms about acceptable language in public office With a lifetime of political memories stretching back to John F Kennedy’s assassination and the Black civil rights struggles of the 1960s, Cheryl Johnson had one complaint above all else about today’s politicians: the swearing. “All this cursing in politics, we never heard that before,” said Johnson, a retired social worker living in the Pittsburgh area. “Words are very powerful, and the past 45 presidents of this country, have not used such vile language. ‘Clear retribution’: dismay as key Alzheimer’s study cancelled amid Trump attacks on science

Participants in Pittsburgh may never learn the results of their cognitive tests – and funding cuts that target ‘DEI’ have the potential to delay vital diagnoses Roderick Blair was surprised when scientific researchers appeared on his doorstep in the Homewood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Here, on a recent summer day, police cars, an ambulance and a TV reporter crowded into a driveway on the edge of the neighborhood. A helicopter swung overhead. Saplings peeked over rooflines from gutters, windows were broken, screens tattered, doors boarded up and rippling sidewalks crumbled. Bedraggled chain link fences held back the season’s tall grass. Fences review – August Wilson’s classic family drama is as smart as paint

Fences review – August Wilson’s classic family drama is as smart as paint

Leeds Playhouse Daniel Bailey’s dynamic production fizzes with jazz and moments of possibility amid taut scenes of thwarted ambition and harsh realities in 1950s America Five years on from their excellent production of Jitney , Leeds Playhouse and Headlong return to August Wilson’s Pittsburgh cycle of plays with a revival of his 1985 classic Fences. It’s another drama of family, masculinity and thwarted ambitions, painting national issues of race and inequality on a domestic canvas. Set in the 1950s, the focus is the African American Maxson family and its patriarch, Troy: a trash-collector, former convict and one-time baseball player robbed of professional success by the colour of his skin. Ray Fearon is horribly compelling as this tragic figure, a man made monstrous by circumstance. His anger at the world seems to radiate across his wide shoulders, which he braces against the anticipated onslaught. Raised in hardship and denied his dreams, Troy rains this same harshness down on his two sons, not allowing the possibility of a better future for his offspring. Continue reading...
