Take It or Leave It review – vividly atmospheric formative adventures of future pop princes Madness

Docufictional 1981 comedy captures the working-class ska-pop pranksters in their hungry years with an almost Loachian authenticity Opting for the former is the best idea for this unexpectedly revealing, vividly atmospheric, often funny and alarming, docufictional comedy from 1981 about the rise of the baggy-trousered ska-pop national treasures Madness. It takes us from their beginnings in 1976 to their chart breakthrough: gormless, penniless blokes, obsessing about music and roaming north London’s gritty districts of Camden Town, Stoke Newington and Crouch End. (This elicits some droll dialogue: “They’re all the same, these streets” … “That’s why they put signs on them.”) Our naughty, dodgy heroes play people’s parties, sign on the dole and do mortifying odd jobs, get told off by site foremen and office supervisors, drive to gigs in Arthur Daley vans, almost get into fights with skinheads and have calamitous arguments with the drummer during rehearsals. It could have carried on like that indefinitely, but the arrival of Graham “Suggs” McPherson as singer is the mysterious ingredient around which everything coalesces: his voice miraculously ups the band’s game, apparently curing their worrying propensity for playing flat. His vocals mesh with the reggae thump of the keyboards and sax and the rest of the band’s goofy jogging-on-the-spot stage energy. Continue reading...

The Standard of Living review – Rory Kinnear has bags of charm as Bloomsbury economist Keynes

The Standard of Living review – Rory Kinnear has bags of charm as Bloomsbury economist Keynes

Theatre Royal Haymarket, London James Graham’s high-wire writing brings economic theory to life and connects it with art and fulfilment in this polished, ravishingly staged story of John Maynard Keynes Not everyone will know that the Bloomsbury group had a jobbing economist among them. One with superstar status and a firm belief in capitalism. John Maynard Keynes (Rory Kinnear) may not have cut a very bohemian picture in his three-piece suit but the foremost thinker of economic policy in 20th century Britain was also a card-carrying art lover, avant-gardist and bisexual who had affairs with Lytton Strachey and Duncan Grant, hanging out with the gang at their nerve-centre in Charleston. He played with equal amounts of old-school reserve, and charm, by Kinnear, as state-of-the-nation writer, James Graham, audaciously brings economic theory to the West End. The high-wire act of the subject matter is leavened by Graham’s remarkable facility to balance British social history and complex political ideas with speed, sparkle and a humorous lightness of touch. NFL week three: Chiefs at Dolphins, Chargers at Bills, Patriots at Jaguars, and more – live

Live updates from the 6pm BST games around the NFL Get in touch: mail Graham about all the latest matches So what has been the difference for Cincinnati on defense? The acquisition of tackle Dexter Lawrence from the New York Giants. The Bengals traded the 10th overall pick for him in the offseason as they searched for an elite gamechanger. And they seem to have found exactly that after beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Texans. Lawrence has been a rock solid base for Cincinnati to go to work and lead the NFL in both sacks (eight) and turnovers (three). Lawrence and company will be feeling good about continuing their impressive start against the Pittsburgh Steelers today. Mike McCarthy’s team are 1-1 but struggling on offense and have retooled the whole right side of their offensive line to remedy having scored the league’s fewest points (23) after two games. (0-2) Los Angeles Chargers v Buffalo Bills (2-0) (1-1) Carolina Panthers v Cleveland Browns (1-1) (1-1) New York Jets v Detroit Lions (1-1) (0-2) Houston Texans v Indianapolis Colts (0-2) (1-1) New England Patriots v Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1) (2-0) Kansas City Chiefs v Miami Dolphins (0-2) (0-2) Tennessee Titans v New York Giants (1-1) (2-0) Cincinnati Bengals v Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1) (2-0) Seattle Seahawks v Washington Commanders (0-2) Continue reading...

The Guardian view on Keynes in the West End: James Graham’s latest play captures the zeitgeist | Editorial

The Guardian view on Keynes in the West End: James Graham’s latest play captures the zeitgeist | Editorial

As the chancellor, John Healey, ponders options ahead of his first budget, the playwright’s new work offers lessons from the past Still only 44, James Graham has become a formidable chronicler of our national story. On themes such as the rise of Rupert Murdoch , social upheaval in post-industrial Britain and the neuroses of the England men’s football team, the playwright and screenwriter has made it his vocation to read the signs of our times and write them up for the stage. Graham’s new play goes a bit further back in history, but its subject matter is characteristically of the moment. Opening this week in the West End, The Standard of Living offers a portrait of the sentimental and intellectual passions of John Maynard Keynes (played by Rory Kinnear), as the great economist makes his name between the first and second world wars. As Keynes rails against the laissez-faire ethos of the age, he seeks to devise a theory of growth that justifies state intervention on people’s behalf in the wake of the Great Depression. US lawmakers pass bill giving Trump more power to sanction Russia and its enablers

Act divides Democrats and Republicans, with some saying it gives president power that could be turned against US allies The US Congress has passed a sweeping bill allowing Donald Trump to raise tariffs on top buyers of Russian energy and issue other punishing sanctions against the Kremlin following a pitched battle between lawmakers backing Ukraine and sceptics worried the bill gives the president too much power. The Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 passed in a 262-159 vote on the last day before Congress goes on recess ahead of the midterm elections. Graham, who died earlier this year, co-authored and submitted the bill more than a year and a half ago. Continue reading...
