The terrifying, unbeaten Chiefs would like you to know your predictions were wrong

The terrifying, unbeaten Chiefs would like you to know your predictions were wrong

Kansas City beat the surprisingly feisty Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. They already look like a very real contender after a lost season in 2025 The rivalry between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Las Vegas Raiders goes back to the formation of the American Football League in 1960, when the Chiefs were the Dallas Texans, and the Raiders resided in Oakland. At no time in that rivalry had both teams faced each other with a record of 3-0 or better until Sunday’s game at Las Vegas’s Allegiant Stadium. An unbeaten record wasn’t entirely surprising for the Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes, but the Raiders? The team won only three games in the whole of last season, but this new Raiders team under Klint Kubiak presents all kinds of challenges for opponents. At first, it appeared that the Raiders might go on to their first 4-0 start to a season since 2002, when they made it all the way to the Super Bowl, where they were vivisected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their former head coach, Jon Gruden. Kubiak’s team held a 13-10 halftime lead on Sunday, and Kubiak told CBS’s Tracy Wolfson at the half that his team was going to win the game . Continue reading...

‘It’s rational to fear the music industry’: Grouper’s Liz Harris on virality, streaming scammers and her ‘restorative’ dream-pop trio

‘It’s rational to fear the music industry’: Grouper’s Liz Harris on virality, streaming scammers and her ‘restorative’ dream-pop trio

When a rarity blew up on TikTok, the solitary ambient artist had fraudsters trying to steal her royalties. It reinforced her DIY mentality – until reforming her band Helen reminded her of the beauty of collaboration In mid-September, I watched as Liz Harris soundchecked to 1,500 empty seats at midtown Manhattan’s historic Town Hall theatre. Soon each plush red chair would be filled for the second of two sold-out nights, but this ornate seclusion felt oddly perfect. It is fair to infer that most of her concertgoers generally listen to the uncanny experimental music she makes as Grouper alone, just as she creates it. Harris started Grouper in 2005 in the DIY noise warehouses of Oakland, California. At 46, she now lives farther north, in coastal Astoria, Oregon, where she creates densely tessellated visual art and spare, lucid albums that have made her a titan of modern ambient music. Painfully beautiful and often inscrutable, hers is a sonic language all its own, creating thickets of sound using little more than guitar or piano, voice and space; her angelic and alien songs have influenced artists as disparate as Phoebe Bridgers and Mk.gee , and been sampled by Lil B and 100 Gecs. It is intensely solitary work, often characterised as sad but full of profound relief. “Like a bloodletting,” Harris offers. Continue reading...

Airborne-Flight Training 09.24.26: UND Fed Investigation, USAF Pilots, FAA Fraud

Also: Air Traffic Controller Training, VOES Expands, Acron Virtual Flight Deck, New Siskin II The School of Aerospace at the University of North Dakota is under federal investigation and is being accused of submitting incomplete, inaccurate and untimely government disclosures, possibly in regards to investment from Chinese aviation companies. The U.S. Department of Education and the State Department announced the move in a press release. According to the departments, UND is a recipient of significant federal awards to its School of Aerospace’s “uncrewed air systems.” The Air Force announced that this year it will achieve a years-long goal of producing 1,500 pilots annually, a target that officials say is critical to reducing a shortfall of more than 2,000 aviators. However, even if the service can keep up that tempo for the foreseeable future, it will be “quite some time” until the service’s pilot shortage is resolved, the Air Force’s top training officer said, according to the Breaking Defense. Two Oakland police helicopter pilots are facing federal charges over an alleged scheme involving falsified FAA check rides. Prosecutors say an FAA inspector helped create records for flight tests that allegedly never happened. The case puts renewed focus on why legitimate pilot certification depends on more than paperwork. Oakland Police Department Air Support Unit pilots David Mac and Brandon Mart have pleaded not guilty to federal charges alleging they conspired with FAA Aviation Safety Inspector William Miller to obtain pilot certifications through falsified records. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!

Judge ends federal oversight of Oakland police department after 23 years

Group of officers known as ‘riders’ in 2000s prompted longest arrangement of its kind in US history After 23 years, a district judge has released the Oakland police department (OPD) from federal oversight, marking the end of the longest arrangement of this kind in US history. In the early 2000s, a group of police officers known as the “riders” were exposed for offenses like planting evidence, falsifying reports and using excessive force against primarily young Black men. These actions led victims to file more than 100 civil lawsuits against the department. In 2003, as a part of the settlement of these cases, OPD was put on a federal court-ordered reform program. Airborne 09.14.26: FAA Inspector Indicted, Too Few Fighters, RCO Shutdowns

Also: 3rd GA Flt School Arrest, Greek Astronaut, King Air Bulletin, Middle Georgia State University Two Oakland, California police officers have been indicted on charges of conspiring with a then-FAA safety inspector to obtain pilot certifications they didn’t earn, allegedly circumventing required test flights and leaving a paper trail of falsified documents. The officers, Brandon Mart and David Mac, and their co-defendant, William Miller, pleaded not guilty at a Thursday court appearance where the seven-count indictment was unsealed. The charges include conspiracy, defrauding the FAA, and falsifying records to obstruct the investigation. The USAF fighter fleet is nearly 50 aircraft short of the number required by Congress, according to a recent Congressional Research Service report. The fighter fleet inventory currently falls short of the statutory requirement of 1,145 fighters, with 1,098 aircraft currently in the fleet. The service also operates an aging and “heavily used” fleet, with aircraft averaging 27.4 years old, according to the report. The FAA has begun shutting down hundreds of remote communications outlets across the United States, with 674 ultimately slated for removal. The first wave began September 3rd, reducing a nationwide network pilots have long used to reach Flight Service. Yet 262 outlets will remain after the agency scaled back it's original plan following public feedback and additional safety assessments. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unlimited!!!
