Country diary: A gleaming beetle that could be bad news for my garden favourites | Susie White

Country diary: A gleaming beetle that could be bad news for my garden favourites | Susie White

Allendale, Northumberland: On a hot autumn day, I see rosemary beetles here for the first time. This could be a problem for many thriving plants This year there have been several firsts in my garden: old lady, vestal and blood-vein moths attracted to the light trap; hummingbird hawk-moths , normally occasional, feeding summer-long from verbena and buddleia; and it’s a painted lady year – a once-a-decade event , these high-flying insects migrating from Africa through successive generations. Southerly winds and heatwaves have added to the species visiting my North Pennine garden. Now, in a herb bed, I spot something less welcome. Among the resinous leaves of rosemary is a gleaming beetle, its elytra striped in purple and green, scintillating like lustreware. It’s not something I’ve seen before, but I immediately know what it means. Rosemary beetle, Chrysolina americana , is a Mediterranean species with no natural predators in the UK. It is shimmering and beautiful – but can reduce plants of the Lamiaceae family to bare sticks and cause them to die back. This includes my favourites: lavender, sage, thyme – and rosemary. Tracking the fin whale and the sperm whale in the Mediterranean

Tracking the fin whale and the sperm whale in the Mediterranean

Where are the great marine animals of the Mediterranean, such as the fin whale, the sperm whale or the bottlenose dolphin? How does their distribution change over a few weeks? All indications suggest that these species shift between marine areas in a remarkably short time and over relatively small spatial scales. Some species, such as the striped dolphin, maintain a relatively stable presence in certain areas, while others, such as the fin whale, move and concentrate in different areas from one observation campaign to the next.

Climate change reshaping the polar oceans, says report

Climate change is increasingly reshaping the polar oceans, with Arctic waters warming rapidly, sea ice shrinking and wildlife losing habitat at both ends of the planet, an annual report said Wednesday. The Copernicus Ocean State Report depicts profound changes across the world's seas, from record-breaking heatwaves in the Mediterranean and Black seas to shifts in marine ecosystems and increasingly acidic waters.

Warming weakens Asian monsoon's reach into the Mediterranean

Warming weakens Asian monsoon's reach into the Mediterranean

The South Asian summer monsoon has long been known to shape the Mediterranean climate thousands of kilometers away as part of a phenomenon known as the "monsoon–desert" mechanism. Through this mechanism, intense monsoon convection during the summer releases large amounts of heat into the atmosphere, triggering large-scale circulation changes that promote sinking air over the Mediterranean. This process suppresses clouds and rainfall and contributes to the Mediterranean region's hot, dry climate.

Could the Mediterranean diet protect the brain through the gut?

Could the Mediterranean diet protect the brain through the gut?

A narrative review finds that the Mediterranean diet may support brain health through gut microbiome, immune, metabolic, and barrier-related pathways, but direct human evidence that microbiome remodeling mediates neuroprotection remains limited. The proposed mechanisms involve microbial metabolites, reduced inflammatory signaling, stronger intestinal and blood-brain barrier function, and possible effects on processes linked to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

How Athens discovered a new, confident Greek cuisine

How Athens discovered a new, confident Greek cuisine

Athens is now a food capital where you can enjoy bustling bars, traditional taverna fare or unearth a new-wave gem in its many restaurants – but it wasn’t always this way See our recommendations for eating and drinking around Athens Visiting Athens for its food might have sounded like a joke to previous generations. Unlike many other Mediterranean countries, including Italy, Spain and Turkey, Greece had no renaissance and no aristocracy to fund chefs and develop sophisticated cuisines. Simple village dishes didn’t always translate well: in the past, tourists would suffer a summer scorching and some desiccated moussaka so they could puff up the Acropolis in August before skedaddling to an island. However, recently the Greek capital has undergone a gastronomic renaissance. Athens always offered the joys of eating outdoors – by the sea in summer, or winter sunshine on the city’s streets – but these days chefs are rethinking the uses of Greece’s unrivalled ingredients, such as scented, sun-ripened tomatoes, barrel-aged feta, and the best olive oil in the world. Enlightened visitors are also re-thinking their trips, arriving at more temperate times of year, and taking advantage of how culinary traditions are moving in exciting directions. They’re exploring beyond the tourist traps and over-Airbnb-d areas around the Acropolis, finding treasures in humbler neighbourhoods such as Petralona, Keramikos, or hipster Kypseli. A bonus is the growing number of restaurants serving food from Asia, Africa, the Balkans and the Middle East. Continue reading...

UNHCR Regional Bureau for Europe: Sudanese movement to Europe - Profiles, routes and challenges along the way (September 2026)

UNHCR Regional Bureau for Europe: Sudanese movement to Europe - Profiles, routes and challenges along the way (September 2026)

Countries: Sudan, Greece, Italy, Libya, Tunisia, Türkiye Source: UN High Commissioner for Refugees Please refer to the attached file. BACKGROUND Since April 2023, Sudan has experienced a devastating conflict marked by severe civilian harm, reports of conflict-related sexual violence, and large-scale displacement.1 As of 6 July 2026, more than 11.4 million people have been displaced, including over 6.5 million internally within Sudan and more than 4.5 million Sudanese who have fled the country. Nearly 60% of Sudanese refugees and asylum-seekers are hosted in just seven neighbouring countries, with the largest populations in Chad, Egypt, Libya, and South Sudan. While the majority remain in neighbouring countries, Mediterranean Europe4 has witnessed a noticeable increase in Sudanese arrivals since the outbreak of the conflict. Journeys to Europe are often long and dangerous. Insights from focus group discussions reveal that onward movement to Europe is primarily driven by unmet protection and basic needs in first countries of asylum. UNHCR considers that persons originating from Sudan who cannot return there because of the conflict are likely to be in need of international protection. UNHCR continues to call on States to ensure access to territory and asylum for people fleeing Sudan, and to respect and uphold the principle of non-refoulement at all times. In this context, this report analyses the situation of Sudanese nationals arriving in Europe, including their profiles, routes taken to reach Europe, and risks and challenges faced along the route. The report is based on arrivals data, 173 protection monitoring interviews with Sudanese nationals in South-Eastern Europe conducted between January 2025 and July 20266, and focus group discussions with Sudanese nationals held in Greece, Italy and Spain. The findings provide insights into the experiences and perspectives of participating individuals and should not be interpreted as statistically representative of all Sudanese refugees and asylum-seekers in Europe or first countries of asylum.
