Manchester's Bee Card Now Fully Supported in Apple Wallet

Manchester's Bee Card Now Fully Supported in Apple Wallet

In August, Transport for Greater Manchester announced that the Bee Card could be added to the Apple Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch, but it was limited to younger riders using free or discounted "Our Pass" tickets. As of this Tuesday, though, the Bee Card is now fully supported in Apple Wallet for all types of Bee Network tickets. To add the card to Apple Wallet, open the app, tap on the plus sign in the top-right corner, select "Travel Card" (may appear as "Transit Card" for some users), scroll down to the United Kingdom section, and choose Bee Network. Once the card has been added, you can buy bus and tram tickets directly in Apple Wallet and store them on the virtual Bee Card. Then, when traveling on the Bee Network in Greater Manchester, you can simply tap your iPhone or Apple Watch on a card reader to pay for your fare. If you enable Express Mode, there is no need to wake or unlock the iPhone or Apple Watch when holding it near the card reader. iOS 27 is required to add the Bee Card to Apple Wallet. Electoral reform could be a gamble too far for Burnham – but so far he’s on a winning streak| Zoe Williams

Electoral reform could be a gamble too far for Burnham – but so far he’s on a winning streak| Zoe Williams

Though proportional representation poses risks for Labour, it’s a change that feels necessary for today’s volatile politics A number of people have admitted to tears during Andy Burnham’s Labour party conference speech , and most of them mean when he talked about his father, who died very recently. But then there were a few (not me) who welled up when he announced a commission on electoral reform . It was just the sheer shock of it: that we may finally have a prime minister who will follow through on his own long-held beliefs and remain loyal to his long-term support base, even if it makes him avoidable enemies and, medium-term, destroys Labour’s only-trodden path to victory. It felt a bit like slipping through time, and I couldn’t even tell you to when (definitely not the 1990s). Burnham’s support for proportional representation has always been extremely unusual for a Labour politician. To this day, he ascribes that to his experience of winning an election as mayor of Greater Manchester on a supplementary votes system, where people get to choose a first- and second-preference candidate. He said that campaigning under that system “finally aligned the conversation on the door with what people want from politics, which is about problem-solving first and foremost, not about point-scoring”. He went a bit further this morning, asking Nick Robinson on the Today programme: “Can we really watch a party with less than 30% walk into Downing Street?” Zoe Williams is a Guardian columnist Continue reading...

‘Visible and engaged’: Burnham in listening mode with businesses at Labour party conference

PM reassures firms and chancellor vows help on costs – but unease remains over possible budget tax rises Business live – latest updates A year ago Andy Burnham had a tough business reception at Labour’s party conference. The then mayor of Greater Manchester, with clear ambitions to replace Keir Starmer, had rattled the City of London with his comment that Britain should be less “in hock” to bond markets . Returning to the annual gathering in Liverpool a year later as prime minister, the mood is different. Labour is pushing to repair relations with corporate Britain and reassure City bond traders against a jittery backdrop amid the Middle East war. Continue reading...

Materials analysis sheds light on minting mystery of 1834 British sixpence

A severely deformed 1834 British silver sixpence preserves physical evidence most consistent with an unusual minting anomaly, according to an IA STUDIO study published in npj Heritage Science. The coin was individually marked £8 in a mixed coin album at a flea market in Greater Manchester. The album was later acquired as a bulk lot, rather than the sixpence being purchased separately for £8.

From old railways to an oasis of art, food and nature: how an eco-park was born in Greater Manchester

From old railways to an oasis of art, food and nature: how an eco-park was born in Greater Manchester

Northern Roots is launching Britain’s biggest urban farm and eco-park, in an effort to boost people’s health and wellbeing Standing in the open green space of Northern Roots, it is hard to imagine the landscape as it once was. Two cotton mills, two coalmines and an industrial railway once occupied this 65-hectare (160-acre) site in Oldham, Greater Manchester. Later, about 24 hectares became a tip, with much of the space left to nature. Continue reading...

New UK PM Moves to Scrap the Gambling Duty He Lobbied Against
