Denmark sink Wales as Rasmus Højlund makes Danny Ward pay for blunder

Denmark sink Wales as Rasmus Højlund makes Danny Ward pay for blunder

Only a few days ago Craig Bellamy suggested Wales had blown Nations League A4 wide open with a hand grenade but here Danny Ward detonated it to gift Denmark a penalty and Rasmus Højlund the chance to earn a slender victory from the spot. Until that moment of madness, after 73 minutes, Ward had kept Wales in the game, his best stop a sublime right-hand save to prevent Gustav Isaksen a headed opener. But after keeping Denmark at bay, he scored an own goal of sorts by taking out Isaksen in the box after a miskick. Bellamy covered his face, using his right hand as a temporary visor while the video assistant referee, Ivan Bebek, reviewed the incident. Then came the unwanted confirmation from the referee and Højlund rippled a pocket of the Wales net with a flawless penalty. A first clean sheet since beating Liechtenstein last November also went out of the window. The life of a goalkeeper, eh? Continue reading...

Manchester City face appeal deadline, Nations League news and more: football – live

Updates on Manchester City and Nations League news Fixtures | Get Football Daily | And you can email Billy Nations League: Let’s have a look back at last night’s action, eh? Wales notched their first win of the campaign by coming from behind to beat Norway in Cardiff. With the score level at 1-1 at the break, Torbjørn Heggem was sent off 17 seconds into the second half and Neco Williams scored the winner from the resulting free-kick. A lot of eyes were on Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, who was kept at arm’s length by Wales and serenaded by chants of “You’re just a shit Kieffer Moore” from home supporters. Martin Ødegaard, who captained Norway to the World Cup quarters in the summer, described the result as the “first punch in the face for a long time” while Wales manager Craig Bellamy was happy to respond to the criticism he has received of late: Look, I am a strong person, I think we all are, but it’s the people around me I’m conscious of. It’s just society. What are we? Eight prime ministers in the space of 11 years? It’s nuts ... We’re such a small country, why can’t we have each other’s backs? Why don’t we look after each other more? The others can go at us. We’re too quick [to criticise]. Continue reading...

Neco Williams fires revitalised Wales to fightback win against 10-man Norway

Neco Williams fires revitalised Wales to fightback win against 10-man Norway

On a night when Erling Haaland moped around the pitch, dragging his hulking frame across the Cardiff turf, Wales registered a welcome victory over 10-man Norway and their first this year. Daniel James cancelled out Oscar Bobb’s well-worked opener in the first half and 17 seconds into the restart Torbjørn Heggem was sent off for fouling James as the Leeds winger streamed through towards goal, resulting in a free-kick from which Neco Williams earned Craig Bellamy’s side the three points. “You’re just a shit Kieffer Moore,” was the chant at Haaland from the locals. Bellamy was under no illusions about the task facing his side. He described Norway as one of the best teams in the world and one riding the crest of a wave after reaching the World Cup quarter-finals. Martin Ødegaard, the Arsenal and Norway captain, was the visitors’ creator in chief and it was no surprise he was the architect for a crisp opener, slotted in by Bobb, one of two Fulham players and one of five Premier League regulars in the Norway starting lineup. Craig Bellamy urges Wales improvement but wary of Norway’s threat

Craig Bellamy urges Wales improvement but wary of Norway’s threat

Wales ‘unrecognisable’ in defeat against Denmark Haaland ‘exactly the same’ after Manchester City verdict Craig Bellamy has said Wales must improve against Norway on Thursday after appearing unrecognisable in defeat against Denmark, and highlighted their next opponent’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals as proof of their talent. Wales host Norway in Cardiff on Thursday hoping to record their first win since last November and their first since promotion to Nations League A. “This team has been on a surge,” Bellamy said of Ståle Solbakken’s side. “They are progressing and they will keep going as well – they ain’t going away, especially with the youngsters they’ve got coming through. We’ve all been waiting [for them to flourish]. But it was coming and it’s come with a bang.” Continue reading...
