Metallica review – metal titans on fine form in spectacular rarities-focused show

Metallica review – metal titans on fine form in spectacular rarities-focused show

Sphere, Las Vegas The first night of a new residency is an immersive plunge into the band’s visual world that showcases the depth of their catalog Las Vegas’s Sphere takes on the characteristics of whatever it’s advertising on its exterior. Depending on when you look, you might see Orbi, the Sphere mascot, winking at you, or an ad for one of their Wizard of Oz showings, or maybe a roiling mass of red flames and shocks of lightning announcing the arrival of Metallica for their residency Life Burns Faster. Looking at it feels like staring at the end times. It’s like a huge black hole, sucking in the jittery sun blasted energy of Vegas and transmuting it into an ominous ode to the renegade titans of thrash, but, you know, an older, wiser, therapized version of the band. This is the first night of Metallica’s 24 show residency, and it features the return of their “no repeat” format, meaning they play twice a week without repeating a single song during that week. It’s a showcase of the breadth of their catalogue as much as it’s a reminder of just how many indelible classics they’ve written. It also makes for a more interesting show. It’s not especially difficult for Metallica to play hours of hits, but it’s more fun when they forgo a few obvious ones in favor of a larger narrative. Continue reading...

Bubba Wallace "paid the price on our front tires" in battle for Vegas win

Bubba Wallace "paid the price on our front tires" in battle for Vegas win

Bubba Wallace had the opportunity to end his year-long winless streak on Sunday, and appeared to be in a great position following the final round of pit stops. Wallace was directly behind race leader Chase Briscoe, and had strong pace in the No. 23 Toyota. He crept closer with every passing lap, but the defining moment came with 29 laps to go. Wallace was all over the back bumper of Briscoe's ... Keep reading

Josh Berry on Las Vegas practice crash: 'It's a shame to be that slow and blow a tire'

It doesn't help that Vegas also features a nasty bump in Turns 1 and 2 where cars often bottom out. Two cars ultimately crashed in Turns 1 and 2, and they were both Fords -- the No. 4 Front Row Motorsports Ford of Noah Gragson, and the No. 21 Wood ... Keep reading

Justin Herbert has been the quarterback of tomorrow his entire NFL career. Whose fault is that?

Justin Herbert has been the quarterback of tomorrow his entire NFL career. Whose fault is that?

The Chargers star is huge, can run and has a golden right arm. But he has never quite reached the heights many expected for him Justin Herbert is one of the most promising quarterbacks in the NFL. In fact, Justin Herbert has forever been one of the most promising quarterbacks in the NFL. That adjective, “promising,” continued to be load-bearing on Sunday, as Herbert and his Chargers turned in an underwhelming performance in a 26-14 loss to the Raiders. Los Angeles are now 0-2 on the year, with those losses coming to the team that just picked No 1 in the draft and a moribund Arizona who picked No 3. Stockholders in Herbert’s growth were taking a beating in after-hours trading. But, as ever, there’s plenty of reason to debate whether Herbert underachieved or whether his team let him down. Herbert is 6ft 6in, can run, has a golden right arm and is capable of making astonishing throws . NFL decision-makers view him as roughly the sixth-best QB in the league but also say things like , “He should have more accolades at this point.” Certainly, he should have more wins this season, but on Sunday the 28-year-old found himself outdueled by one of the league’s senior citizens in Vegas quarterback Kirk Cousins, who is 10 years his senior. Herbert completed 15 of 27 passes for a touchdown and two interceptions, and he also took three sacks. Cousins threw a pick and took two sacks but was much more efficient from down to down (8.7 yards per attempt to Herbert’s 7.1), and the Chargers offense mostly sputtered. In 13 possessions, Los Angeles put together two long touchdown drives and otherwise didn’t march more than 30 yards in a series. Continue reading...

Is Las Vegas Out of Luck?

Is Las Vegas Out of Luck?

Las Vegas was for many decades a “rock star” airline market. That’s what Allegiant once called it. But like Elvis in his later years, Vegas seems to have lost some of its vigor. Is it just a temporary setback? A case of missing Spirit Airlines? Or is there something more to this dip on the […]
