Mass sardine die-off pits survival of South Africa’s penguins against fishers’ livelihoods

Mass sardine die-off pits survival of South Africa’s penguins against fishers’ livelihoods

Known as the ‘energy bars of the sea’ the fish are a key food source for many species, but closing fisheries to allow numbers to recover would cost millions It began on 28 July, when fishers near Saldanha Bay on the west coast of South Africa reported seeing dead sardines (also known as pilchards) floating at sea. Then, in early August, more dead sardines began washing up on beaches near Cape Town. In the weeks that followed, similar reports came in from places across a vast area spanning 2,600km (1,600 miles) of coastline , such as Henties Bay in Namibia and Mbotyi in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. South African Women Need Protection, Not Warnings

South African Women Need Protection, Not Warnings

All the women were found naked or partially clothed, according to police. Some of the bodies had bruising. At least three suspects are already in custody as authorities continue to examine possible links between the killings. These mysterious killings of women are not isolated crimes but part of a longstanding crisis about gender-based violence in South Africa. Earlier in 2026, Human Rights Watch noted that systemic criminal justice failures impede women in South Africa from accessing justice, while survivors have limited access to psychosocial support. Human Rights Watch has also documented that sex workers, LGBT people, and undocumented women face additional barriers to protection and redress. The South African Medical Research Council has in the past, estimated that nearly seven women were killed each day in the country, including three by an intimate partner. Police failed to identify a suspect in about 44 percent of cases. South Africa’s Constitution and other regional and international laws guarantee the rights to equality, dignity, life, and freedom and security of the person, including freedom from violence from public or private sources. Following the killings, South African police urged women to avoid walking or exercising alone. These types of warnings shift responsibility to the victim and cannot substitute for effective measures to prevent and respond to gender-based violence. The authorities instead should conduct safety audits in affected communities, improve lighting and police visibility, strengthen efforts to prevent and address domestic violence, and respond rapidly when women are reported missing. The authorities should have adequate resources to investigate and prosecute these cases, and keep families informed as they do. President Cyril Ramaphosa, who has condemned the killings, said that South Africa must stand up for women’s “rights, safety and dignity.” That requires more than condolences and warnings. It requires effective and immediate government action that enables women to live, work, travel, and participate in public life freely and safely.

US to bar some South Africans over claims of anti-white discrimination

A spoonful of sugar: how South Africa’s weigh-and-pay shops are tackling ‘poverty tax’ head on

A spoonful of sugar: how South Africa’s weigh-and-pay shops are tackling ‘poverty tax’ head on

Run by a social enterprise, the six shops operate from shipping containers across Johannesburg’s Alexandra township and sell food and household goods by weight in small, affordable amounts Every morning, on her way to the laundry shop she runs in Johannesburg’s Alexandra township, Tsholofelo Mphela stops at a bright yellow shipping container to buy a few spoonfuls of sugar. Inside, shelves are lined with large jars of beans, rice and maize meal, and clear boxes filled with breakfast cereal and loose teabags. A tap dispenses cooking oil by the millilitre. The cashier weighs Mphela’s purchase before ringing it up for a few rand. Continue reading...

Astronomers detect ancient hydrogen signal that could help map the Universe

Astronomers detect ancient hydrogen signal that could help map the Universe

Astronomers have detected an exceptionally faint hydrogen radio signal from billions of light-years away using South Africa’s MeerKAT telescope. Instead of finding galaxies one at a time, the technique measures their combined hydrogen glow across enormous stretches of space. The successful detection shows that astronomers may soon be able to create much larger 3D maps of the Universe.

Bring on the drones: how a technology revolution is being rolled out across Africa’s nature reserves

Bring on the drones: how a technology revolution is being rolled out across Africa’s nature reserves

As graduates of an online training course gather from across the continent, the consensus is overwhelming: computers and saving animals go together On a bitingly cold night in Lapalala Wilderness nature reserve in South Africa’s Limpopo province, Duncan Kanyakera watches as instructor Jacques Viljoen deploys a thermal drone in search of a lone cheetah. Once the drone has disappeared into the inky sky, Kanyakera, from Tsavo in Kenya, and 20 other conservation professionals from across Africa turn their attention to the open-air screen in anticipation. Many of the students – from 11 African countries as far flung as Benin, Liberia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Madagascar – witnessing the demonstration have earned their places at Lapalala after performing well on an online training programme for protected area technicians (PAT) run by the Connected Conservation Foundation (CCF). Also on the course, are five members of Peace Parks staff in training. Continue reading...
