Brisbane 2032 Olympic officials forced to explain early YouTube release of emblem

Brisbane 2032 Olympic officials forced to explain early YouTube release of emblem

BRISBANE, Australia: Brisbane 2032 Olympic officials were forced to hold a quickly-organized media conference on Saturday to explain the accidental leaking of an Olympic and Paralympic emblem three days ahead of schedule. An explainer video meant to go live after a planned ceremonial event on Monday briefly appeared on the event’s YouTube channel on Friday night. Screenshots of images and text soon circulated on social media. Government official Tim Mander and Brisbane 2032 chief marketing officer Brent Hill suggested the accidental release was a pleasant surprise. "This is the culmination of a really exciting week,” said Mander, the Olympic and Paralymic minister. "This is an incredibly exciting milestone as we head to 2032.” Hill said it was a case of making the most of an unexpected opportunity - "the publicity has been incredible.” The Olympic emblem is the crest of a pink cockatoo, an inland Australian bird, with the colour stylized to resemble an Olympic and Paralympic flame. It follows a staged unveiling this week around Queensland state regional centres, ahead of what was planned to be the official reveal on Monday in Brisbane. Speculation as to the identity of the emblem was encouraged, with athletes suggesting it could be anything from a crocodile’s tail to a mango. Former Olympic and Paralympic stars such as swimmer Ian Thorpe and cyclist Anna Meares took part in the staged reveal. Hill admitted the Games committee would have preferred the unveiling to have proceeded as planned. "If we had our time over, maybe there’s different ways we could have done it,” he said, adding that there was more to come at Monday’s official unveiling.

Chris Fagan leaves Brisbane with nothing more to prove after building one of the great AFL teams | Jonathan Horn

The 65-year-old steps down with the Lions’ dynasty firmly in place, having put the club on an unprecedented upward trajectory Coaching can take grown men to dark places. Justin Longmuir was in that place late on Saturday afternoon after the AFL grand final . During the presentation, he began to topple over, like someone suffering abdominal pain or warming up for a pilates class. In reality, it was probably a body going into shock. We shouldn’t use words like “grief” when we talk about losing a game of football. What happened to Fremantle and Longmuir was akin to someone running over the family pet. Longmuir, a farmer, would scoff at such a comparison. But the hardest thing for anyone associated with Fremantle is finding the right measure of hurt – do you hide under the doona for a week, do you skip the country, do you employ a bit of gallows humour, or do you take pride in how well they played? There is no precedent or playbook for how to respond to a loss like that. Chris Fagan was in a very different place. At first, he was utterly wrung out. Those around him seemed conscious of giving him space. It took him several minutes to gather himself, to actually enjoy himself. Within half an hour he had reverted to type – deflecting all praise, commending the opposition, reminding his players to be humble. Continue reading...

Brisbane’s AFL dynasty is built on sheer talent, a loyal coach and their love of a dire situation | Jonathan Horn

Brisbane’s AFL dynasty is built on sheer talent, a loyal coach and their love of a dire situation | Jonathan Horn

Chris Fagan kept faith in his Lions which meant they could thrive with the weight of the football world upon them – and rip out Fremantle hearts There is no precedent for what happened at the MCG on Saturday. There have been devastating finals losses before – the Bulldogs losing the 1997 preliminary final to Adelaide and St Kilda losing the 2009 grand final to Geelong immediately spring to mind. A senior St Kilda staffer described the rooms after that game as resembling “a casualty ward following a mass disaster”. Thankfully, we don’t talk about sport like that any more. The modern athlete and the modern sporting club is better able to put their world into some sort of perspective. The prevailing mood in the rooms, in the stands and on the trains on Saturday was a mix of desolation and bewilderment. Part of it was Fremantle’s history. Part of it was the decision to activate Wharfie Time. Part of it was just how quickly it all happened. You establish an identity and for more than three decades you scratch, claw and hope. And in five minutes, your heart is ripped out. Continue reading...

Brisbane roar back to seal three-peat and break Fremantle hearts in AFL grand final classic

Lions beat Dockers 14.12 (96) to 12.17 (89) at electric MCG Wharfie Time backfires as Lions surge home in closing minutes The Brisbane Lions secured a historic third-straight AFL premiership, defeating Fremantle 14.12 (96) to 12.17 (89) at the MCG. In a barely believable grand final, the defending premiers ended with a four-goal spree in the final four minutes, including the final two from Logan Morris, that followed the Dockers’ Wharfie Time activation. At that stage Fremantle led by 17 points, but the Dockers folded afterwards. Brisbane finished like a freight train on an afternoon that began with Kylie Minogue’s sparkling performance that featured The Loco-Motion. It was only the second time since 1981 that a team has won the grand final after trailing at three-quarter-time, following Geelong’s comeback over St Kilda in 2009. Continue reading...

Australia v Brazil: men’s international football friendly – live

Updates from the first of two games in Queensland Kick-off time in Townsville is 8pm AEST Any thoughts? Get in touch with an email Joey Lynch is in Townsville tonight to report on the game and has already taken in Brazil’s unlikely visit to the north Queensland town with a population of just over 200,000 as the place to begin their regeneration after another World Cup failure. A legacy of more World Cup titles than any other nation demands respect, as does the aura of a shirt worn by the likes of Pelé, Socrates, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Neymar. Vinícius, Raphinha, Marquinhos et al are global superstars, and the cultural cachet of joga bonito still permeates. So too are the good vibes, good people and goodwill that accompany them; a Brazilian supporter with a prop World Cup trophy in hand was among those navigating the connection to Townsville from Brisbane airport on Thursday morning. These fixtures, followed by a game against India on 3 October, are going to prove lucrative for the South Americans too. They’ll even be taking the field in Queensland as the official “home” side. Which brings us to football. And to start, if Brazil are after a genuine Australian football experience they will get one at Lang Park in Brisbane next Tuesday, when they play on a surface only four days after the Dolphins v Roosters preliminary final. But coming off another World Cup failure, Brazil have also landed at an inflection point. Or perhaps more accurately, the latest inflection point, as the nation conducts a new round of soul-searching over an increasingly diminishing place among football’s elite. Continue reading...

Brisbane’s Lachie Neale to miss grand final as AFL’s one-game ban upheld

Dual Brownlow medallist guilty of intentional striking Plea of ‘exceptional circumstances’ rejected The prospect of Brisbane Lions’ midfielder Lachie Neale playing in Saturday’s AFL grand final has plummeted after his suspension for striking Hawthorn’s Jack Ginnivan in last week’s preliminary final was upheld by the AFL tribunal. The two-time Brownlow medallist had never been suspended across 320 matches, but he failed to argue his exemplary record warranted this week’s ban be set aside due to the so-called exceptional and compelling circumstances afforded to Collingwood’s Scott Pendlebury earlier this year. Crocodile-ridden river cleared to host Brisbane 2032 Olympic rowing and canoe sprint

Crocodile-ridden river cleared to host Brisbane 2032 Olympic rowing and canoe sprint

SYDNEY: The crocodile-ridden Fitzroy River in the city of Rockhampton has been cleared by an independent report to host the rowing and canoe ‌sprint events at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, organisers said on Thursday. The flatwater venue, part of a plan to include regional Queensland in Australia's third Summer Olympics, initially attracted attention because of the presence of some 500 saltwater crocodiles in the river. Concerns later focused on the river's current but the report has cleared it to "provide a safe, fair and consistent field of play", organisers said in a statement. "The assessment included extensive on-water investigations and modelling to understand how the course would perform under a range of conditions, weather patterns, water levels ‌and flood risk at both Games time and throughout the period leading into the Games," the statement said. Queensland Premier David Crisafulli told the state parliament on Thursday ‌that the waterway, which is some 600 km (370 miles) north ‌of Brisbane, had been cleared "with flying colours". "Many have said it can't be ‌done," he said. "We back in ‌regional Queensland - no ifs, no buts. Our commitment has been steadfast, and our message is clear: regional Queensland can and will host ‌events on the world stage." World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland said he had demanded a robust assessment of the proposed course to ensure fair and equal conditions for the competitors. "We now know that the Fitzroy River is capable of providing fair competition conditions during the period of the Games, consistent with the requirements of Olympic and Paralympic Rowing," he said in the statement. Paddle Worldwide, which will organise the canoe sprint event, also endorsed the findings of the report. "The quality and depth of the technical work undertaken has significantly improved our understanding of the field of play and provides confidence to us and our athletes that the course can deliver fair competition," President Thomas Konietzko said. "We look forward to maintaining our strong ‌partnership and continuing to work together to deliver an outstanding Olympic and Paralympic competition venue in Rockhampton for 2032." Brisbane's bid for the 2032 Games was processed through the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s "New Norms" policy, where existing facilities would be upgraded where possible. Organisers have nevertheless elected to build a new 63,000-seat Olympic stadium and an aquatics centre in a Brisbane city centre ‌park.

AFL finals: where the Sydney v Fremantle preliminary final will be won and lost

The Swans are within touching distance of an unlikely grand final spot while the Dockers have their campaign for a first premiership back on track Sign up for our free weekly AFL newsletter Sydney’s season was meant to be dead and buried by now. The club-imposed suspension of five players for breaching club standards was thought to have weakened the side to such an extent that a straight-sets finals exit was all but guaranteed. But while the spotlight was on the absent players, a galvanised group of those who remained – one still sprinkled with stardust – dialled up the heat to stun Brisbane and surge into a home preliminary final. The emotion-charged triumph made the Swans the 13th team to win a qualifying final by more than 50 points since 2000. Eleven of the previous 12 teams then earned a spot in the decider. But for all of their newfound momentum, Dean Cox’s side have to overcome the loss of another pivotal player after captain Callum Mills sustained a serious knee injury against the Lions. The Swans have turned doubters into believers with the way their players have stepped up in the face of adversity. But it would be another chapter in a story for the ages if they can beat the minor premiers to reach a third grand final in five seasons. Continue reading...
